Replacement transistor for old PSU
« on: March 30, 2020, 01:11:21 am »
Hi.

I have a faulty PSU from a very old computer with a blown up transistor, but I am having a hard time finding a suitable replacement one.
The power source inputs 100volts (Japan) and outputs 12, -12, and 5 and -5 volts, and the computer amperage is less than 1 Amp.

The faulty transistor is a 2SA1061 (datasheet here).

Hanging around home I found a few TIP147T (datasheet here).

Are these TIP147 a good replacement for that PSU? If not, what transistor would be a good (modern) replacement?

Thanks beforehand.

The TIP has dramatically more gain (mainly due to being a darlington).  This could be anywhere from harmless to problematic, depending on how the transistor is used.

Do you have any info about how the transistor is used in the power supply?  If you don't have a schematic then some clear photos of the top and bottom of the circuit board would help us with making suggestions.

EDIT: As a side note: I've read that many of the big metal TO-3 package style parts on eBay don't meet specs.  Greymarket sourcing a part is fine if you have the ability to test it (full load) outside of your circuit first, but if you are not up to that then I would suggest using more official suppliers and pay the extra few $.

If you search Newark for a 2SA1061, then the NTE391 is put forward as an alternative:

https://www.newark.com/nte-electronics/nte391/bipolar-transistor-pnp-100v-to/dp/31C3990?ost=2SA1061&iscrfnonsku=true&ddkey=https%3Aen-US%2FElement14_US%2Fsearch

Is the 2SA1061 transistor part of a complimentary pair in your power supply? If so, then it may be advisable to also replace its NPN counterpart with a NTE390, at the same time.
