Replacement VGA Connector for Server Motherboard
« on: July 12, 2022, 02:16:32 pm »
Hi guys. I am trying to identify a replacement for the VGA connector on this HP server board.

One of the screw stand-off thingies has been broken off. It is actually riveted and not a screw in one like usual so unfortunately I can't simply replace the stand-off.
When the KVM cable is connected it is putting quite a lot of strain on the connector and it is causing issues with the image now so I think the solder joints are starting to crack. So really it needs a new connector.

I have had a look at the D-SUB HD15 connectors available from CPC Farnell who I usually order from but the ones they have appear to stick off the edge of the board a lot further than this one so they would not fit.

It is a Foxconn connector and is labelled H502H on the top but I couldn't find if this was a part number or something?

I will upload more pictures below but I have to do it individually because the forum has such a tiny file size limit for photographs.

Another photo showing the foxconn label if you look close.

Another pic, sorry it is a bit blurry, but you can see how close the pins are to the edge of the PCB and connector!

Having the standoff won't alleviate the strain the KVM connector puts on the VGA connector, it just prevents the plug from being accidentally disconnected.

But isn't it easier to replace the broken stand-off with a normal one with nut and washers?
They are the same used in the DB-9/DB-25 connectors for RS-232.
Apart from the problem of finding an identical connector then you should remove it (which is not easy without suitable equipment) risking damaging a multilayer pcb.

Well normally I just screw a replacement stand off in (I have accumulated a selection from faulty PCs and cards over the years) but the hole on this connector is not threaded and also the hole is a larger in size than the stand-off so they just don't fit very well.

Currently the display output is either yellow or Magenta in colour but if you pull up on it the image is normal so it needs re-soldering anyway, I may as just well replace it.

Replacing the connector is the easy part for me. I have done loads of D-sub and VGA connectors before but never encountered these "shorter" smaller form factor type on regular desktop PCs. Just on this HP server which is odd. Once I source a new connector it will be an easy fix.

When I replace these connectors I just re-flow the joints using lead based solder with my iron, then wick away the solder on the two supporting lugs.
Then I use Kapton tape to mask around the joints and use hot air tool to melt the solder on the pins and the connector just pops out.
Then clean the area with IPA and install a new connector.

I would bet this is the same or close enough to be made to work..

or try putting some epoxy putty in the hole and screw in a regular standoff or order a standoff with a longer threaded end that goes all the way through and use a nut.

The part you are looking at was likely discontinued a long time ago. The HP solution even when that board was new would have been to replace the entire board.
