Hi! I'm repairing a circa 1995 rack mount audio effects unit. After much research and observation, I'm 99.99% sure the SMD electrolytic caps need to be replaced. These caps have a history of leaking (which I can see on my board) and failing.
Most of the caps are for the audio inputs and outputs on the analog board.
I'd read that Panasonic FC (low ESR) caps were best for this job. Seems those are hard to come by these days. Is this recommendation of the FC caps just audio-foolery? If "general purpose" caps will do the business, then I'm ready to pull the trigger and just get the damn caps and repair this thing.
Also, one of the caps is on the PSU board right by some serious heat emitting regulators (not great design) Should I put a "high-temp" cap there, or is this lily gilding?
Here is the thread about the specific piece of gear. I'm just making a new thread I feel this is a general enough question to get a quick answer from those more experienced than me (which is most of you haha)
Once I get my caps, I'll attempt to use my 858D+ for the first time for something other than heatshrink hahah.
Thanks so much
