Replacing foam padding in Fluke 189 battery compartment
« on: July 25, 2020, 10:34:18 pm »
Just bought a Fluke 189 from ebay, opened the battery compartment, and found that the foam padding in it turned to goo. I was able to get all of it out using alcohol.

The question is, what should I replace it with so that it does not deteriorate in the next few years? Without the foam the unit is running fine, but i'm afraid that the batteries may become loose in the compartment.

On modemhead's blog, I believe he just used double sided tape and cut his own padding.

If you click on F189_028.JPG, it will say "New battery cushion strip installed."

PS. I recommend using Eneloops vs alkaline batteries.  Or if you use alkaline, check them every 3 months for leakage.

Thank you! I see the battery cushion strip, but what is it made of?

As for eneloops, they are rechargable, right?

See suggestion from coromonadalix in post below.

Yes, they are rechargeable LSD nimh.  I use them in my 187 with no problems.  I like using the 187 with backlight so I don't care how much battery life I use because I can just recharge them and I always have fully charged sets available if I run out.

Eneloops are also rebranded by others.  One for example is Ikea Ladda's.  See

https://eneloop101.com/batteries/rewrapped-batteries/

Look for Made in Japan.

I have "real" eneloops, Duracell and Ikea rebranded.  All are Made in Japan.
