Rewiring old equipment...
« on: July 10, 2020, 10:39:01 pm »
Not really test equipment related but wanted to share anyway. Several decades ago I got an old compressor and the last few years the mains wiring started to look a bit shoddy so I decided to rewire it. The mains wiring isn't complicated. It goes through an automatic-shut off switch to a single phase motor. The motor has a Klixon to switch the starter winding off once the motor runs and the usual running capacitor. The motor might be over 50 years old. When opening the wiring housing I noticed that the wires for the running capacitor didn't look very good. Once I got the running capacitor removed the insulatation just fell off:

1020898-0

I should have rewired this thing ages ago. To determine a replacement capacitor I measured the value; still at 54uf which is about right for a 250W motor.

There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.
