Ribbon connector: Dyson V11
najrao:
My V11 died, and I have located a first fault at the connector J5 on the motor pcb. The ribbon leading to the display has corroded to the point where one track is broken right where it contacts the pin on J5. Very difficult to take a photo, but I have tried. The break can be seen on the fourth track from the top.
The ribbon is just 5mm wide, the tracks are on a 0.5mm pitch, and are gold plated. No idea how much current flowed in the broken track, but before cleaning by IPA the appearance was that of corrosion rather than a blowout. There is a bit of free length, but I am not confident of cutting off and stripping to expose a fresh end. Also, the plating would be gone.
Replacing it would not be an option, such parts are not sold.
Can anyone help, please?
Edit: If I can find a way of scraping off the insulating overlay, I can simply cut off a bit of the ribbon and expose fresh and undamaged tracks to the connector. The gold plating seems to extend well into the length. Must remove the insulation without scouring the tracks. How do they do it in manufacture?
I have also discovered that the offending connection is indeed +12V from the on-board switcher, which can source >500mA into a fault.

Maybe a fiberglass pen for exposing the traces? Otherwise, scrape VERY carefully (under a microscope) with a curved scalpel blade.

Thank you, Tooki. A very sharp and pointed knife tip is what it took to scrape and expose the no.4 track. Well away from the end, I soldered a a 30 gauge Kynar wire, but alas, a check shows that there is a dead short to ground. The break was indeed due to blow out. I have to remove the display pcb at the end but this is proving to be well nigh impossible. Dyson assembles everything so only some very enterprising spudger work will dislodge parts. Let me see tomorrow.Thank you

Well, I cut off a short bit at the end, and it now mates directly at the connector. Indeed, there is no short, and the display fed by the ribbon now lights up dimly, but with no legend at all. The motor does not turn on yet.
Dyson might have set up one or more enabling interlocks, and/or my unit has some more issues. None of a myriad videos on V11 offers any insight into the subject. May be we have someone here who can put me wise?
