RIFA capacitor replacement
« on: September 12, 2024, 11:34:26 am »
Hello everyone,

I have two old rifa caps in a snubber circuit(I guess). I couldnt find any document about them, please can you advise me modern caps instead of these rifas.

Safety film capacitors. Rated X2 or Y2 depending on whether they are L - N or L/N - EARTH/CHASSIS.

If no safety caps are required you could use Wima MKP series.

These are not safety caps. Rifa made multiple series of that garbage. They can be replaced with regular polypropylene capacitors. Polyester should be fine too in most cases.

They are most often found on primary side, including filters etc. I stand by my recommendation.

Safety versions are marked as such. You don't need safety capacitor for snubber.

I stand corrected. I'll rephrase to "Safety film capacitors. Rated X2 or Y2 depending on whether they are L - N or L/N - EARTH/CHASSIS. Unless you're 100% sure a safety rating was not part of the original part or should have been given the application" ;-)

The pictured parts are DC rated interference suppression capacitors, i.e. PME261 from this pdf.

Yeah, wrapper provided a pdf as well. Hence me grudginly admitting I may have been not 100% correct and modifying my original statement in the most minimalistic way possible ;)

The USP of metalized paper capacitors like the Rifas is high dV/dt capability. Polypropylene would be the safer (in terms of longevity) replacement choice of the two.
