Rigol DS1052E knobs and display have turned funky!
« on: June 09, 2020, 07:33:16 pm »
'Aloha Friends!

My aging Rigol DS1052E has stopped working. This has happened before where I temporarily fixed encoders by spraying them with contact cleaner. (probably a stupid thing)

Anyway, now a year later knobs are again very much not working, but this time the display is weird too.

Notice how it shows two trigger lines. The two blue areas on the upper haft, not sure whats going on there either. This shows even if I have disconnected the button/knob board completely. so it isn't simply the result of an encoder shorted out badly.

Suggestions on where to start with this? (or should I simply trash it and get a new one?)

You've switched delayed scan on. Press the horizontal section's menu button. You'll see that 'Delayed' is ON. Press the button next to it to turn it OFF.
I'm not David L Jones. Apparently I actually do have to point this out.

Fantastic. how foolish of me. thanks!

Next is to figure out which one of the 6 encoders that is in need of replacement. I will see if I can work that one out.

Hey mate, hope you don't mind the unearthing; I just got my hands on one of those and it had the exact same issue.

I somehow managed to fix it for now using contact cleaner (I had to place it face up and blow dry air to make sure the fluid goes all the way into the contacts), but it seems pretty damn fine for now!

Did that fix hold up in the end or did you have to replace the encoders anyway?

Contact cleaner alone will not permanently fix scratchy encoders switches and Pots. A made for the purpose contact treatment oil is needed.
Or as I have been using for 20 years, PAO synthetic oil, usually marketed as refrigeration or air compressor oil.
