Rigol DS1052E replacement trigger potentiometer
« on: January 05, 2015, 09:52:00 am »
All:

Dropped a large flashlight while working on a project and it hit the trigger pot on my Rigol and snapped the shaft off  >:( >:(. Does anyone know where I can source a direct replacement or an equivalent. Here is a picture (not mine but off the net) of what I need.

Sorry, this one is more suitable having 12 pulses per revolution

sorry the shaft looks a bit long on that one maybe someone will chime in with the exact one because my trigger knob broke today

I haven't taken the scope apart yet, but I am pretty sure the trigger pot is NOT a encoder. the Channel 1 and 2 horizontals are

It is but they do not have detents.

Attached is schematic someone on this forum made. According to this it has 24 pulses per rotation.

Well I got around to taking the damaged encoder off the board and took it apart. From looking at the guts does anyone know how many pulses. The schematic seems to suggest 24 for the trigger control. The mfg is ALPS (no part number), but can't seem to find a replacement on their website.

It is a 24 position one, though as it is a non numbered control you could use any number of position one with only the number of turns per hundred clicks being different. You can use a 16 or 12 position there if it fits.

How do you tell it is a 24 position from looking at the picture. Has me stumped trying to figure out 24.  But yes, you are probably right, don't think it's just that critical the trigger level will just move slower or faster depending on the encoder positions I suppose.

Simple, it uses a single ring and 3 slider contact positions to provide the pulses.  As it rotates the slider touches first the one set of segments, then the other, to the common solid section, to give the direction and clock ( or quadrature position) pulses. As it runs out of track the sliders swap on the common segment. Look at half the ring and you get 12 positions available, thus the 24 pulses per rotation, or look at there being 8 positions per third of a turn of the wiper.

Looks like I have sound something very close if not identical. 24 pulses with a switch. If not I am sure I can take apart and use the shaft.

If the Rigol has a "set to 50%" feature on the trigger, you will need the switch.
