ADVANTEST U3641 Spectrum analyzer - Software issue
« on: January 29, 2017, 08:23:15 am »
Hi there,
I'm trying to repair my old spektrum analyzer (ADVANTEST U3641) which seems to have some problem with its firmware (I assume).
In the attachment you can see the only window the instrument shows when it boots up, where it asks to install the system software.
It seems to be possible to download the firmware via the serial port... but I can't find any info on the web.
Do you have any clue? Thanks for your attention!

Your best chance of help is on the Advantest test equipment Yahoo Group.

Someone may have a Firmware image that you can use. I am not sure how someone has managed to erase the firmware as such is not easy to do.

There are many very knowledgeable people in that group. There is much sharing of firmware revisions. Sadly the U series of portable spectrum analysers are less well 'known' and somewhat of a mystery in terms of their inner workings. I have one that needed new electrolytic capacitors throughout. Every surface mount 100uF capacitor plus many others were leaking ! Worth checking on your unit. The inverter board was the failure in my unit due to electrolyte leakage but further invesigation revealed the poor state of the capacitors in all modules.

It is possible that your unit has gone into the software boot loader as a result of a fault on the processor board or even the inverter board. Well worth a carefully look at the boards. The processor board contains all of the main memory with some extended memory for configuration on another board.

I did a write up on my investigation into the U series Analyser on this forum in the 'repair' section.

Wow... thanks for this precious information.
I'm going to dissect my unit too (even though I wished there was some magic "software" trick with the serial port).
