Rigol DSA815-tg Power Supply Failure need chip ID
« on: August 15, 2021, 04:40:17 am »
Hello all, here’s my situation, I recently found my Rigol DSA815-tg with a very dim and intermittent flashing screen, like one quick and very dim flash every few seconds. The light in the power switch was doing its slow blink as usual but it would not turn on. My first thought was a power issue and probably the switch mode supply was sensing a problem and cycling on and off. I unplugged it for a few hours and moved it from its place on my bench and onto my workspace when upon plugging it into my Isolated Variac it began working OK, drawing about 20 watts. <Sigh> So after a few on-off cycles and some ‘on’ time while checking other functions when suddenly I heard a ‘pop’ and it let out the magic smoke, now it is completely dead. No flashing, no slow blinking lights, nothing. Whew… I’d rather have a dead unit than an intermittent one. There was, of course, a faint smell of smoke so upon opening the unit I found an 8 pin DIP in the power supply with its top blown off. All caps appear OK, no other failed parts were apparent. Obviously, that part will need to be replaced but I cannot read the part numbers off the 8 pin DIP. It is the 8 pin between the upright torrid and the small xformer in an enclosed area behind an ‘L’ shaped alum heat sink toward the top of the PCB. (I say ‘top’ according to the silkscreen on the PCB) If I can post a picture I will. So my question; would anyone have the numbers on the top of the 8 pin DIP so I can further diagnose? I would never be so bold as to think someone has a diagram of this supply… <Silly Grin>

Thanks for your quick response Peter, I appreciate it...  Out of curiosity, I'm wondering if anyone in the group has a photo of that section of a working unit, I'm just curious how the faint numbering on my chip, '...01' and the '..472', (if that's what they are) lines up with a TEA1522? Would those numbers on my part be a date code? Perhaps a TEA1522 is a replacement? What are your thoughts?

Best,

The photo is from the same power supply, but from the MSO2000A. I don't have a photo of the DSA815 where the labeling is readable.

Again, thanks for the quick feedback... Great shot, looks like I've got my day planned... Of course, I'm wondering if I've got a component failure or an overload somewhere else. Time for some head scratching~!~  It was odd behavior early on before it catastrophically failed. I'm sure the two are interrelated. It really looked like a Switch mode PS trying to protect itself at first, then smoke.  OK, it looks like 1522 version is obsolete but I found some from a third party and have a few on their way.  Thanks again Peter...

One more question, this for the group... Has anyone else had PS issues in Rigol units? It sounds like they may have similar supplies...
