Repair Rx470 gpu artefacts
« on: March 29, 2020, 07:58:51 pm »
Hello guys,

I have at hand two gpu s that ware used in mining. They are rx470 with 8gb from xfx. One is just fir parts ant the other one has some fat lines on the screen. I tried to reflow the main gpu but I have never done that and I was to afraid to heat up the gpu more then I supposed. After my attempt to reflow the gpu, nothing had changed so I tried using the gpu as it is.

After installing it in the computer, I was able to see that in device manager, the card was listed as basic video adapter. I downloaded the drivers and successfully installed them but then, every time the windows boots, the gpu goes black.

Is there any way I can fix this card, it may be the memory chips? As I seen that they are a bit toasty in the middle.

Also, is thare any way I can test those mem chips and, if one of them was broken, the card would even boot?

Most miners do install a special firmware to overclock the card. You need to check that - bringing the card back to spec might even fix the memory problem.
Otherwise a line on screen hints at a defective memory chip. Reflowing will most likelyonly do more damage and will not help.

Ohh I never thought of that. How do I even check for the firmware and if that is bad, it is hard to install the original one back?

Also, I have another board which might have some good memory chips but is there any way to test those ans see which chip is bad?

I tried to check the memory chips with some of the programs that are able to do that but non of them recognizer my gpu. I was able to go with a normal rezolution and those 2 fat lines ware divided in foul lines as they scaled up with the rezolution change.

I tried to update the bios but the ATIwinFlash tool gives me an error that no ati gpu ware detected.

Is thare a way to install the original bios to this card?

Check with https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ what you actually got there…

And a bunch of different BIOS files: https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/?architecture=Uploads&manufacturer=XFX&model=RX+470&version=&interface=&memType=&memSize=&since= - check the descriptions though (different memory types, different clock speeds). You might want to try a low core and Memory speed first.

Flashing tool: https://www.techpowerup.com/download/ati-atiflash/

I did checked with the gpuz utility but no luck, the name was also Microsoft basic vedeo.

Also I did find 3 bios updates for this card but neither of them worked as the card was also listed as micrisoft basic adapter. I used the free dos utility to instal the bios.

I will attach a photo if the screen after I scaled up the rezolution.
