SMPS repair mosfet replacement
« on: December 19, 2019, 04:18:04 am »
A friend of mine gave me three cordless drill lithium battery chargers to take a look at because all of them were faulty. I have managed to fix two of them but the last one has many components damaged because of shorted Mosfet. The MOSFET in question is STP9NK90Z (https://www.st.com/resource/en/datasheet/stp9nk90z.pdf). I can't seem to find this part in any of my local electronics shops. Maybe someone could recommend a drop-in replacement for this MOSFET?

Edit: Found this one in my local shop: https://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/24533/STMICROELECTRONICS/STP9NB60.html would it work?

Does the supply have active PFC, or do you have 240v mains, or does it use a voltage doubler input?

You might be able to get away with a lower voltage transistor for 120V mains and no active PFC or doubler (so the transistor is supplied with, probably 160VDC), but otherwise, I wouldn't suggest it.
