Solder mask peeling
« on: February 19, 2021, 02:50:47 am »
I bought a stacker arcade machine led PCB 2nd hand but some of the solder mask is peeling how can I fix this.

I dont have specialised equipment I just have a soldering iron and some tools.

I have never replaced solder mask before and I don't know how to do it.

If I use an mg chemicals conformal coating pen will that work to insulate the PCB and to prevent shorts with the other side of the board.

Why do you need to replace it? It is really only necessary during automated soldering.

Given that it is peeling, I assume it is the type of the process that tins the traces first, so there should not be exposed copper that may corrode.

Missing solder mask will not cause shorts unless something else touches the board. But that would be a bad design no matter what.

I know I’ve seen solder mask pens in a catalog, I forget who makes it. But as others have said, it’s usually no problem. What I like to do, if there’s exposed copper, is to tin it with solder so the copper won’t oxidize. But this is not in any way a requirement.
