My Sony FM/AM Walkman headphone radio was sporadically shutting off over the past few months. I would install new batteries but they would last only a few days. I checked the batteries using a battery checker and most times they tested good. I was using Kodak batteries and figured that might be the problem. After months of having this problem I finally decided to open up the Walkman. The problem was faulty battery contacts.
If you open up the side where the batteries are installed you'll see that the batteries connect to the main board by touching the + and - solder points on the main board. A poor design in my opinion. Over the years the solder points had holes worn into them by the battery contact pins. Problem was solved by just flowing new solder onto the main board solder points and building them up a bit.
These headphones are used daily in- and outside and are excellent on AM. Bought them used from a Good Will store a few years ago. Was on the verge of tossing them out and buying new, but it turned out to be a simple fix.
I've also seen the same poor battery contact problems with two of my wife's Dakota watches.
