I have what appears to be a VFD (vacuum fluorescent display).
It's turned up to full brightness and it's barely readable, even in low light.
It seems to be on it's way out. Is there a simple and uncostly repair available?

I have some gear with a similar issue and I saw an interesting thread here:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/vacuum-fluorescent-display-rejuvenation/
with some suggestions.

The display tube may be bad, but before condemning it I would check the filament voltages, any small parts like resistors or diodes associated with the filaments,
and also check the -30V bias supply.
