Star Wars arcade machine - no EHT on projection CRTs
« on: May 02, 2016, 09:49:54 am »
We have an old Star Wars Trilogy arcade machine that has 3 projection CRTs and for the first few months it worked great then one day it had a black screen. I figured there might be no EHT on the CRTs, and waving a CRO probe near the horizontal output transformer didn't pick up anything. I imagine the drive signal to the horizontal output stage has quit. We have no schematics at all. Could anyone help here?

I would guess that the horizontal transistor has died, probably from either dry joints on the LOPT, flyback tuning capacitor or the power supply.  Replace with only the exact device, and resolder all the joints in the LOPT area, and check the capacitors and the resistors there, along with the joints on the drive transformer. Power supply voltages should be marked on the PCB from the power supply. Check them all, there is a similar SMPS there with the same issues.

As well clean the EHT cables and the splitter, so that there is no dust to cause a flashover which will kill the new transistor.
