Bump: Substitute line filter for HP54201A
« on: December 20, 2023, 01:14:42 pm »
Any suggestions for a suitable replacement line filter?

Trying to find a replacement line filter suitable for an HP54201A oscilloscope. Was getting it ready for disposal - figured it might be a useful first scope for someone starting out. It's been in storage for over a year.  Booted up and self-calibrated OK but after about 15 minutes it blew lots of magic smoke.  However, it continued working till I cut power and is seemingly still functional. Turned out the Schaffner line filter has let go. Easy clean-up and no evident harm to PCB. Perhaps I should have brought it up to operating voltage more slowly with a variac?

Can't find any spec sheet or details for the fitted FS 2150-6-07 apart from schematic and specs on the housing (photo attached) or anything in the FS series. Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement?  I had a look at the current Schaffner range but couldn't confidently work out the right substitute. Perhaps an FN9233 series would suit (https://www.schaffner.com/product/fn9233)?

You did nothing wrong, even ramping up the voltage would have blown it up.
Post mortem fun: 5 bucks on "blown RIFA cap inside" :)

FYI another thread on the same model scope https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/hp-54201a-digitizing-scope-worth-buying/

My first DSO was a HP 54501A.  I still have it, it still works and I still use it on occasion.  Great scopes IMO.
