Symphonic VCR Model SL220A no power
« on: January 25, 2024, 07:19:50 pm »
hey all i got this vcr off ebay to replace the one my grandparents have and it has no power, after taking it apart i found the main pcb to have a crack with several traces broken, after running some wires to fix said traces i still get no power, i checked the fuse and it was good, i checked the voltage and i am getting 126v AC, started looking around the board and found the part pictured to be broken and needing to be replaced, however i dont know what it is or what to replace it with, does anyone have any idea?

Hi!

These are standard Common Mode Mains Filter Chokes used in almost all modern electronic equipment power supply boards and you should have no problem getting replacements – ask around your family and friends if they're throwing any old mains–operated electronics out, like old set–top boxes, dvd players, etc., etc!

. . .The exact inductance isn't vitally important, but 2 × 1 mH or 2 × 1.8 mH rated at 3A or more will be suitable – almost all of them are made on the same physical format and pinout!

. .  AliExpress and eBay will have them by the ton – look for one with the correct pin spacing and approximately the same thickness of wire and number of turns as your old one!

. . .If the pin layout is symmetrical, make sure you put in the replacement the correct way round or else you'll get a very large bang if you insert it so it connects across the mains instead of in series with the lines !

Hi!

Any Good?

Research brings your VCR back to these two related models? The circuit diagram in the EWV403 book I've attached quotes this choke as "4.5 mH", so one of these should do – select "5 mH" from selector drop–down box before ordering !

Just for testing: the VCR will run fine without the choke, just needs two jumper wires

i went ahead and yes i know what i said but i went ahead and tried it and as soon as i plugged it in, i got power! yay, however there was a pop, i dont see anything blown but i noticed two things, one of the wires was attached to the wrong spot, fixed that and there was a solder bridge on the lb11880 chip and i think that chip might be fried

if you dont mind me asking where did you find those manuals at? i wanted to use them to trace out the lb11880 chip to make sure a couple of my wires are going to the correct place but the boards in those manuals are way different

Hi!

. . .Elektrotanya and one foreign language site I can't get a direct link to!

. . .There is a manual advertised for the SL220A on some of these very suspect commercial sites but I do not think they are genuine – it's possible the SL220A Service Manual may only have been available on paper!

I wonder what condition the rest of the VCR is in if there is a broken PCB…
Did you have a look at the mechanics - especially all the rubber parts?
Pinch rollers are becoming more and more difficult to source.
Best of luck to you

It’s in pretty decent shape, no cracked or broken plastic and the tape deck seems to be good though I won’t know for sure until I get the pcb fixed
