T1 Marking on PCB - Three terminal dipped device - what is it?
« on: December 09, 2020, 06:08:13 am »
What is this thing?  I would have expected a T marked part on the silkscreen (this is T1) would be a transformer, but it's this little three pin dipped part that looks more like an oscillator than any transformer I know.

Looks like pins 1 and 3 are basically shorted, but pin 2 is floating.  Under the coating on the outer legs it almost looks like ferrite beads - is this a pair of beads with a single turn in the middle or something... but then it's marked like a cap/inductor...

It’s a LCL EMI filter.

It's a Murata EMI filter "EMIFIL", which is two ferrite beads and a cap to ground in the middle. So pins 1, 3 are a short, and pin 2 open circuit to any other besides 1,000pF capacitance.

Thanks for the quick replies, no idea why the layout designer decided to use a T  :-// , but that certainly looks like a match and what's being described.

A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.
