Tektronix 214 dial parts needed
« on: December 21, 2023, 07:29:15 pm »
I'm starting to wonder if this unit is going to be worth repairing...
So to start off I will thoroughly admit that so far this used equipment buying experience proves, once and for all, that I am a complete moron!  |O

I saw a Tektronix 214 up on FB Market Place and it was the only used Oscilloscope available at the moment locally, and it was a decent enough price for me to take a look.

It turned on, and drew straight lines... sometimes.  But fool that I am, I didn't have anything on hand to generate a signal.  Mistake number 1(2 if you count buying a used scope to save money without proper knowledge).

So, having seen pictures online of these units with exploded battery gunk coating the whole inside, I decided to open it up and take a look.  This was mistake number 2. I was confident in my ability to take things apart and reassemble(I'm a pretty solid computer tech)

No exploded batteries... but had a hell of a time putting it back together under pressure from the seller hanging over me and starting to get annoyed about how much time I was wasting.
And of course when it started up, no more lines, no matter how much I twiddled the dials!  :palm:
The seller didn't want to go through me taking it apart and reassembling it again and just offered it to me for $80CAD, so I figured that I'm an electronics repair noob, so a small project to get me started that will only loose me $80 if I fail is... an excuse for my shameful purchasing decision. Mistake number 3(buying the damn thing).

So after taking it home I managed to get it put back together and working as well as it was originally, but I noticed that the back dial had no detents(didn't click between settings like the front ones and spins freely).

I am getting to the point, honest  :blah:

Today I followed the manual and disassembled it the correct way  :palm: and found that the plastic screws that hold the back part of the rear dial on the circuit board had snapped.  I guess old brittle plastic and all that.
So I started to take that control panel board off the side panel of the unit... and when removing the front dials one of the dial caps broke on the inside where it holds it onto the post!  :palm:
So now I need 1 dial cap, and I havn't even finished taking it apart to see what I need to fix the other dial.  And that's not even getting into checking the electronics.

So my question(before I spend more time on this) is: Are these dial parts going to be unobtanium?

You can try 3D printing a part. Or gluing the broken plastic back together.
Hehe, spooked my friends with an exploding electrolytic capacitor the other day 😁.

I finished taking it apart.
The parts I need are (Tektronix Part#):
  • 380-0244-00
  • 366-1469-01
The first one is a collar around the switch that holds clamping force between plates on either side of the circuit board with plastic bolts that are molded into it.
The second is an external dial.
I searched the part numbers online and found nothing in stock anywhere, and nothing on ebay.
Unless I can find a cheap parts unit, or someone has one that is hopeless to repair that they can scavenge off, this unit is likely to be useless.  Without that first part it will not work... I think the issues I was having to start with were do to that dial only making partial contact.  If turned to the right point where the last nut was holding on it would display a trace, otherwise the output was junk.

This is a part with very tiny plastic bolts formed into it... I have no idea how they even made it to start with!  I also don't have a 3D printer, so unlikely I can make that work.
