Tektronix 2792 restoration
« on: December 10, 2023, 06:28:53 pm »
Hello everyone.

I acquired an old Tektronix 2792 spectrum analyser. It was very cheap. For what I can see, it works fine and measurements are accurate. I will have to run more tests and probably have it calibrated but for now I didn't want to let it work too long without working on the power supply first.

So I want to change all the electrolytic capacitors on the power supply as well as the Rifa safety caps (X and Y class). I have a problem though, I can't figure out how to open the unit. There are those rubber feet on the top and the bottom with a screw in the middle but it doesn't seem like they allow the unit to open. At the back, there is those two big rubber feet with two big and long screws but once the screws are removed, the feet barely move at all. I didn't want to apply too much force to avoid breaking anything.

I was wondering if anyone knows or have an idea how to crack this thing open.

I've done similar things on my Tek 492A. If your SA is similar, I strongly recommend getting the full service manual, since dismantling it sufficiently to access the PSU was completely non-obvious.

I got my 492 service manuals from ArtekMedia. Their quality is excellent and the price is sane. AFAIK, they are back in business after the critical person died.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

Thank you for the answer. I looked on ArtekMedia and they don't have the 2792 manual but the 492 series look similar as far as the case is concerned. The most obvious difference I see is that the 492 don't have the keypad on the front panel so I ordered the manuals for the 492P. I didn't want a hardcopy so I chose the download but after the payment I didn't get any link or code to download. I contacted them and will proceed as soon as i get an answer.

It seems easier to find information about the 492 series then the 2790 series, looks like they were not that popular.

It'd be better to start with the 494AP manuals.  492 manuals are probably 10-15 years out of date.

As for removing the cover, just pull harder.
