Tektronix 492 Spectrum Analyzer - case stuck
« on: September 10, 2021, 07:09:21 pm »
Sooo, picked up a parts special, with broken handle on one side.
I unscrew the 4 screws on the feet of the unit. The case "should" just slide off.
It doesn't. It appears to be binding somewhere. Possibly related to the broken
handle and the ultra tight clearances between the case and the unit. The case
will come out maybe 3 inches, 4 inches - then bind up so tight, it's not going
anywhere.

Has anyone run into this kind of scenario before ? If so how was it resolved
(to allow the case to be slid off) ?

Usually this happens when there's a small concave dent in the cabinet that catches on something.  Not much you can do other than force the issue, as far as I know.  It's unlikely to hurt anything if you just yank on it, because the areas that are most subject to binding up are sturdy frame pieces.

Watch out for the plastic covers on the HV and deflection amp, as they tend to stick out and can easily be damaged.  That won't happen when removing the case but it is very likely when putting it back on.
