Would the seller happen to have been "maggi-****"???   I recently bought a 465 from them which was also poorly packaged.  the vertical knobs got crushed and one of the var shafts/coupler snapped in half. If that is who the seller was, it appears they did not learn their lesson when I 'informed' them that they damaged the scope via horrible packing.

I've bought several CROs on ebay, and as long as the front of the scope has several layers of thick bubble wrap taped over it - or the actual plastic cover for 400 series Tek scopes - they arrive fine.  sometimes the plastic cover gets cracked, but oh well.

to have a moron in shipping is one thing but provided that the outcome of this is acceptable i wont provide any negative feedback however if they try stooge me then of course it will be scathing

I have just started restoring some 7603 and 7613 'scopes and have started compiling a spreadsheet version of the parts lists in Excel, which will let me type in a serial number and change the parts list to reflect what *should* be in the current scope I am working on. There were many revisions during the course of its production run!

Sorry to hear the bad news :(

Btw I did find the graticule part number 311-1055-00

This site is sold out but has a picture
http://www.sphere.bc.ca/test/tek-parts/tekpots.html

Now I'm chasing R1028 (readout/intensity) on the parts but can't find it.

Found a source for the graticule/beam finder:
http://www.qservice.tv/vpasp/shopexd.asp?id=4260&bc=no
Edit: no cables attached but you have the cable already.

R1028 on the manual is totally eluding me, but the one you have should have the part number.

Do you know the part number for the readout/intensity pot? R1028 on the 7603
The service manual doesn't list it anywhere that I can tell.

That's not an 8, it's a B!!!!
Part number is 311-1404-00 for the readout/intensity variable resistor pot.

Can't find stock anywhere for that part :(

With that damage, especially the cracked CRT face (it's a writeoff, even if it still has vacuum) I'd be concentrating on demanding a full refund, including what you paid for shipping. You have photos  demonstrating serious unrepairable damage due to completely inadequate packing. One layer of bubble wrap and some styro-peanuts does NOT cut it. The peanuts *always* flow around, leaving some side of the item up against the inside of the box.

It's the seller's fault, make them pay for return shipping if they want that wreck back.
Or alternatively, did you pay for shipping insurance? Claim it.

Leave deciding what to do with the scope, until the refund is in your pocket and it's settled whether you get to keep the scope. Only reason you should be opening it up is to take photos of the internal damage.
But do try to keep it, as a spare parts unit.

I collect 7000 series scopes and plugins too. I'd be really pissed with the seller about that. It's just negligence and stupidity. I've had a few similar shipping damages, always due to poor packing. In my early days of ebay buying I'd be polite about it, but not any more. Make noise! Teach the slackers a lesson.

Btw, which carrier were you using? I find TNT very good and haven't had a single damaged item with them. Even stuff that was very badly packed (exposed carry handle on a vintage logic analyzer!) got here from USA undamaged thanks to their careful handling.

Edit: Ebay seller electronicscafe is pretty high volume, they have about a 0.67% negative rating for the last six months, and they do (claim to) give full refunds sometimes. But check their time limit for claims.

at the end of the day i paid with paypal so if i really have to ill just file a claim through there.

i have no idea what carrier they used - i got home from work one day and it was sitting at my door! there are no shipping stickers or anything else either. only thing is an ebay sticker on the box

i am well within the time frame for refunds - they give 2 weeks i believe and i made the claim the day i received it.

If it still has a vacuum, that CRT is an implosion waiting to happen.

I'd be REALLY careful around it.  Especially since it looks like you've removed the plastic filter from the front.  It's supposed to protect from flying glass.

Yep, I would not even switch the unit on to test the crt.

Curious: Is an imploding CRT in some way worse when it's heater / anode are biased?

No, the explosion is just as bad, but now you will have a nice hot arc as the power supply trips out, and hot glass exploding out where before it was room temperature. At least the damage is on the edges, so the CRT will just lose vacuum, rather than shattering.  Larger CRT units have the tension band around them so that they do not implode out too badly when damaged, the band keeps the whole front glass in compression so cracks do not propagate through it. Tek just used a flat glass thick enough to not bow, as they needed the linearity which a regular CRT does not have without serious correction. It can implode.

Bump just to make sure the OP is ok, since we haven't heard from him after the potential implosion warning.

sorry ive been busy with work lately.

electronics cafe gave me a full refund and simply gave me a return authority to ship it back.

I never turned it on or anything like that i wasnt game enough and i was concerned that if i turned it on and the glass blew up they would refuse the refund saying it was my fault.

i have purchased another 7603 so now i have to see what condition that comes in when it finally arrives.

thanks for the help everyone - i may need it again haha

Before we all get too overwrought about this----- Oscilloscope tubes are quite small, compared to even the smallest TV display tubes & are consequently much less stressed.
In 40+years in Electronics,I have yet to hear of one instance of normal CRO tubes imploding, let alone causing injury.

Some of the very large WW2 Radar display CRTs however, were very much more hazardous.
The very early TV display tubes were very similar, hence had a piece of safety Glass in front of them.
Later designs of TV CRTs did not need these due their construction  as SeanB points out.
