Hello:

1/ Get manuals, avail from TEK

https://www.tek.com/product-support?series=AFG1000%20Arbitrary/Function%20Generator

2/ Follow troubleshooting proceedure

3/ May have self test functions

4/ Old TEK units can have CAL or other parameters stored in battery backed CMOS or EEPROM, check for that

Hope this helps,

Hello, I download the first four files, because they are the most recent, but none of the manuals show the procedure to do the self test.
The instrument fails to be turned on as shown in the attached photo. I can't get it to start.
Thanks for your help.

First step:  Do as Jonpaul suggests and open it up and check and see if it has some kind of NV memory backup battery. Most equipment of that vintage does. If it does then the battery will almost certainly need to be replaced and it's very possible that it has leaked by now and caused damage to the circuit board(s).

Hello, a few days ago I opened the device and at first glance there was nothing strange. I decided to remove the main board to review it. I found that it was as if some liquid had been spilled on the board. Then I gently soak and clean with isopropyl alcohol with the help of a small brush. I gave it several rinses and then let it dry. When observing the remains of the alcohol I noticed that at the bottom of the container there was a white sediment, I wonder what it would be?

Well, I have checked the card after a few days and I see that there are still traces of dirt, the board is not completely clean. I need to clean it even more.
To save time, I check the electrolytes with an esr meter and they are all ok. Although a few days ago a couple of them marked me in bad condition.
Locate the NV Ram this is the U32. This is a small square pcb board with 120 pins soldered to the main board, I wonder is it okay?
Also note that a regulator attached to its heatsink has the thermal paste spread out, as if it had been manipulated with fingers. But I don't see that the welds have been touched up. Besides, I found a small MS621FE battery, it has only 0.51v but I did not notice that any of it has spilled. It is necessary it to replace.
I don't see bad tracks or components.
And Well, it also seems that no one has tried to repair the board.
According to your experience, please, how could I check if the NV Ram works?
I will be grateful for any suggestions,
73! Rafael

@Rafik - the "spilled liquid" it may have been resin flux residue, this is confirmed of the white powder remaining in the alcohol, on the board and on the washing container.
Most likely your defect is either due to an interrupted firmware update or a NAND memory crash (this is bad).
The battery MS621FE is a rechargeable battery, 0.5V is low, but this should not cause the defect you're seeing:
 https://www.sii.co.jp/en/me/datasheets/ms-rechargeable/ms621fe/
In any case, they cost so little that you can replace them.

In any case, your device has no self test or such described in the user manual, and even so, it does not have a valid firmware to run such a test, so ignore all of the previous messages, it's clear that the error is in the device flash, is either defective or somebody did a bad update.
Get the latest available firmware from Textronix (registration is needed):
https://www.tek.com/signal-generator/afg1022-software/afg1022-firmware-update-v124
put the .bin file in the archive on a 4GB FAT formatted stick (Read the included PDF with the instructions) and with the stick inserted in the USB port power-on the device and pray that it works (it could be that it may need a special recovery firmware on the usb stick, but only the Tek service has it).

Cheers,
DC1MC

Hi DC1MC, I really appreciate your suggestions and explanations.
Well, I already assembled the device again, just in case turned it on and it still has the same fault.
I have tried to download the firmware from the link that you sent me but they sent a message saying the following:

"In compliance with U.S. Government regulation, Tektronix is required to review all software download activity. This process may take up to one U.S. business day and you will be notified when the process is complete."
It seems I have to wait for a while to get it. Its not too bad.

So, a question, if the NAND memory is the problem, is it possible to get it at a parts store or is it not commercial?
Regarding the recovery firmware, does it have a specific name?
It seems to me that there is an authorized tektronix service not so far from my area and I could ask them specifically for this firmware. I hope this will be simple.
For now I will wait for a reply about the AFG1022 Firmware Update - V1.2.4
As soon as I get news I post.
73!
Rafael
