Title: Tektronix DPO5054 - Installing new hard drive
Post by: spymac on June 16, 2024, 11:46:05 pm
I have been lucky enough to score a Tektronix DPO5054 from scrap at work.  It would power on with fans running, beep once, and did nothing else.  The screen stayed black.  I was able to get the thing running after replacing the CMOS battery.  It still didn't work with the new battery but I hooked up a PS/2 keyboard and mashed around with ctrl-alt-delete, various function keys, and probably most importantly the delete key.  The BIOS settings appeared and after pressing "save & exit", the scope returned to normal operation.  It booted from the hard drive and all was well.  Right away, I used Clonezilla to make a couple of clones of the hard drive.  One of the clones was onto a solid state HD, and I proceeded to boot up the scope and remove all documents, etc.  All is well, and I could consider it done at that point.

Like any computer that I get from the recycle bin, I would like to start fresh with the hard drive.  There is no telling what might be on there and typically I would zero out the drive and do a fresh install.  I think it is the right thing to do.  So I have proceeded trying to find a way to do that, and I would like to reach out to tell what I have tried so far, what did and did not work, and get any ideas others.  This can also be a good resource for anyone that got a similar scope without the hard drive.

This scope comes with Windows 7 Ultimate edition.  The Windows license sticker on the back says "Windows 7 Ult EMB x32/x64" and has a typical Windows serial number.  Looking at the existing installation's computer properties, (i.e. right-click "This PC" in explorer and go to properties), it says that it is the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate.  The "EMB" on the sticker made me think that it was the embedded version of Windows 7 though.  I found an ISO image of Windows 7 embedded 64-bit, burned it to a DVD, attached an external DVD drive and a fresh hard drive.  When I installed, it would not accept the serial number from the sticker.  I tried again with the normal Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and it did accept the serial number.  Based on this, I am under the belief that this scope runs the non-embedded/normal Windows 7.

So at this point, I have the scope booting up into a fresh Windows 7 and next is to install the TekScope software.  And I have not made any progress at all on that.

First, I downloaded and tried installing the "Deployment Package" from this page:
https://www.tek.com/en/support/software/firmware/deployment-package-for-dpo5000-b-mso5000-b-v1081 (https://www.tek.com/en/support/software/firmware/deployment-package-for-dpo5000-b-mso5000-b-v1081)
"DeploymentPackage_V10_8_1_DP9_066141831.exe"

When I try to run that, I just get a message box that says:
Quote from: Tektronix Deployment Package Wrapper
TekScope software cannot be loaded onto this unit.
Contact your nearest Tektronix Support Center for assistance.

Next, I found this one:
https://www.tek.com/en/support/software/firmware/mso5000-and-dpo5000-series-firmware-upgrade-package-windows-7-v613 (https://www.tek.com/en/support/software/firmware/mso5000-and-dpo5000-series-firmware-upgrade-package-windows-7-v613)
"DPO_MSO5000_V6.1.3_0.exe"

Similarly, it gives me a message box that says:
Quote from: TekScope - InstallShield Wizard
This software is intended for use on Tektronix  DPO/MSO5000,
DPO7000C or DPO/DSA/MSO70000C Series oscilloscopes only.
Setup cannot continue.

That was kind of the dead end of my web searches.  I looked through the hard drive that came with the scope and I found a couple of other installers that the previous user must have saved:

"MSO_DPO_DSA_5K_7K_70K_V7.6.1_066141813.exe", file modified date May 13, 2016.
It gave this message box:
Quote from: Tektronix 5K_7K_70K Deployment Package
This software is intended for use on Tektronix DPO/MSO70000DX
Series oscilloscopes only.
Setup cannot continue.

"MSO_DPO_5K_V6.4.0.exe", file modified date May 29, 2012.
It started by installing a Java runtime, which appeared to be successful.  Then it tried installing "TekScope version 6.0.4.7".  A small red X appeared and it said "TekScope is not installed properly.  Click Cancel to exit the deployment package."  No actual description of what may have gone wrong.

"TekScope_6_2_0_26_Firmware_2011.10.20.10.11.02_19137_EN", file modified date October 20, 2011.
Quote from: TekScope - InstallShield Wizard
This software is intended for use on Tektronix  DPO/MSO5000,
DPO7000C or DPO/DSA/MSO70000C Series oscilloscopes only.
Setup cannot continue.
(Same message as the one from the 2nd download link above.)

I am gathering that these various installers can't tell that it is a Tektronix scope.  Looking back at the system properties of the original hard drive, it was personalized with:
Manufacturer = Tektronix, Inc.
Model = DPO/MSO5000
as well as a Tektronix logo and support information.  Maybe the installers are checking for this information that would not be present in a vanilla Windows 7 installation?

According to this document from Tektronix:
https://www.tek.com/en/documents/primer/windows-7-ultimate-64-bit-sp1-operating-system-recovery (https://www.tek.com/en/documents/primer/windows-7-ultimate-64-bit-sp1-operating-system-recovery)

The scope probably did come with Windows recovery DVDs when it was new.  The document goes on to talk about an Acronis true image tool that is included on the hard drive, if you press F5 during startup.  I went back to a clone of the original hard drive and pressed F5 like it says.  This got me into the Acronis menu, where I pressed a restore button.  It warned me about losing my data on the hard drive.  When I proceeded, the scope very quickly rebooted and no such restore had taken place.  I also noticed in the start menu that there was an Acronis program installed, which allowed creation of a bootable ISO.  I made the ISO file, but it was much too small; on the order of 50 MB.  So I do not think that the original hard drive actually has the recovery files unfortunately.

Does anyone know how I could reproduce the recovery DVDs, or ideas how to get these installers to recognize the scope properly?

Can you show us a photo of the label of the HDD?

Can you dump the drive's 512-byte Identify Device data block using a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo? You need to select this option from the menu.

https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/ (https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/)

It could be that the installer is looking for a Tek branded HDD. If this is the case, there are ways to make a non-Tek HDD look like a Tek HDD.

I am not able to upload images directly.  I am guessing it is because I am a new user here.  I used postimg.cc; let me know if there are any issues seeing the images.

I wrote with a sharpie on this HD so that I did not lose track of it.

If you boot one of your clones and try to reinstall the Tek software over the top of the existing installation, do you still get the same error messages?

For now, apply the driver to the device marked with a exclamation mark.
It is possible that the device is being checked for its presence during installation.
I think you can extract and apply it from the clone file of the previous hard disk.

In my experience with the TDS7104, there is no special work on the HDD. But it communicates with PowerPC, which controls the acquisition board, via an internal PCI bridge.
Therefore, during the installation of the TDS7104 software, the installer should have output an error if the PCI bridge could not be recognized. I vaguely remember this.

other exclamation mark  like pci device could be the bridge between the computer side and scope side ???

tek uti ???  never saw this one    could be,  touch panel or front panel ???

for the 7k series i restarted,  the mobo  as limitations on the size, not the brand ...   you need the power pc / VxWorks booting correctly in the settings,  if not tekscope crash or stall, and for sure the POWER PC  driver

tekscope will replace some files, but it as some limits,  as i saw  not all driver re-install themselves
IE: touch panel / front panel / gpib interface / and a few ...

i have some iso's of the 5k series  i could search  in them ...  not at home       ill update this thread   if i find them  later

for what peripheral   loll    ..........  that's why i wrote,  pci bridge,  touch  or front panel .... that's what i think

the touch screen is normally seen as an hid / mouse

touch panel is something else.  on tds7k   once driver is installed

for front panel you'll see the leds blink / initialize  ...  should be the same for 5k series

EDIT   could be wrong    could be  TEKVISA related, GPIB
???

I have a few updates on this.  I made a copy of the Windows/System32 folder from the original installation, and I was able to update the driver on each of the exclamation point devices on the vanilla windows 7 installation.  I browsed to the copied system32 folder and it was able to find all of them.

"Ethernet Controller" became:
Intel 82583 Gigabit Ethernet Controller

"Other PCI Bridge Device" became:
Tektronix Acquisition Interface

"TEKUTI" became:
Tektronix USB-THC Instrument

I also was able to extract the computer properties from the original installation.  This included some registry items and the image:

C:\Windows\System32\oemlogo.bmp

Unfortunately, even after all of these changes and rebooting, all of the installers still did not work.  They all still thought that it was not a Tektronix scope.

i have some iso's of the 5k series  i could search  in them ...  not at home       ill update this thread   if i find them  later

I would greatly appreciate that, thank you.

Tektronix USB instruments use and require a generic USB Device Driver, referred to as a USB Test & Measurement Class driver or USBTMC driver. USBTMC is a subclass of the USB specification.  This driver is typically included with the Virtual Instrument Software Architecture (VISA). (See block diagram below.)

For Tektronix oscilloscopes, this driver is included with TekVISA.

If you are able to reinstall the Tek software over the top of a working clone, then this will tell you that the missing piece is in the software. OTOH, if the installer still complains, then the missing piece must be in the hardware. If something is missing from the hardware, then one place to look would be CMOS RAM (admittedly, that would be stupid).

Sorry I forgot to reply to you on that.  The installers do work on a cloned HD.  So I agree it seems like there is some other file or software on the hard drive that it is looking for.  Or maybe something in the windows registry?

Executing the following line in a CMD window will dump the entire file list to a text file:

Code: [Select]
dir c:\ /s /b > filelist.txt

You can modify the line to limit the listing to hidden or system files, etc.

You can also export the entire registry to a text file (using regedit.exe).

It seems that your files have disappeared.  I was not able to download unfortunately.

I did manage to get a working install, but it is with an old version of TekScope.  I am still working on getting a newer version running.  The big secret was that there was another folder in the registry that contained the information about the model of the scope.  I found this by using "Process Monitor" to record all registry accesses by the installer, then filtering out all of the successful accesses.  This narrowed it down to like 10,000 accesses, which I saved as a CSV file.  I searched the CSV file for "Tek" and found it that way.  I added this inside "OEM system information.zip".  The file "TekScope TDS5000 Identifier.reg" installs the registry keys.

Here is what I currently have working:

1. Install the standard Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1.
2. Install the Windows 7 convenience rollup update.
  2a. Download from Microsoft: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3125574 (https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3125574)
2b. This is a very lengthy install without many progress updates.
2c. Eventually when you click restart, it will then go through the normal windows update process.
3. "DPO5054 Drivers.zip"
  3a. Unzip the file.
3b. Open Device Manager and manually update the 3 unknown devices, browsing to the unzipped folder.
4. "OEM system information.zip"
  4a. Unzip the file.
  4b. Copy oemlogo.bmp into C:\Windows\System32\
4c. Open "OEM System Properties.reg".  This adds the OEM information to Windows System Properties.
4d. Open "TekScope TDS5000 Identifier.reg".  This adds the identifier to the registry needed by the Tektronix installer.
5. Go to Windows Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows Features on or off.
  5a. Navigate to:
      Message Queue (MSMQ) Server /
Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server Core /
          MSMQ Triggers
5b. Tick the checkbox for MSMQ triggers and click OK.  Windows will install the feature.
5c. This fixes an error message about "mqrt.dll".
6. Manually copy the NI Device DLL files from NI Device/x64/ into C:/Windows/System32.
6a. This is for TekScope software to run, otherwise it will get stuck at the splash screen.
7. Open "DPO_MSO5000_V6.1.3_0.exe".
7a. This installer will restart a couple of times and occasionally has OK buttons to click.
7b. When it is done, TekScope will run automatically.

Thank you, I was able to get the file downloaded and I am seeing the drivers and things inside.  I see there is an actual installer for "NI Device"; this may be the better way than the raw files that I attached for that.

I installed 6.1.3 directly.  It was a deployment package.  I am still not able to install the latest software on top of this, which is V10.8.3:

https://www.tek.com/en/support/software/firmware/deployment-package-dpo5000-mso5000-dpo5000b-mso5000b-dpo7000c-dpo70000c (https://www.tek.com/en/support/software/firmware/deployment-package-dpo5000-mso5000-dpo5000b-mso5000b-dpo7000c-dpo70000c)

This does work to upgrade the cloned hard drive though.  So there is still something that the newer ones are looking for.

well   not supported by  xp  .....  not even sure if w7  is able to run it ??  try compatibility mode window2000  (if its available)

but  i think you're going too far with win 7   if its still the case

i would scrap everything and redo all with a Win2k Sp4  setup, install all the needed drivers and see ??  BEFORE putting  TEKSCOPE packages 6.12 6.13  ...

you need to get a basic setup working .. and it's not,  you jumping steps i would say  no offence

that's what i did on a 7404, being sure:  the power pc was ok, the pc side was okay,  before putting tek softwares, i had many failures before understanding this

as i said, it is a pc computer with added  scope peripherals / hardware, i tried w95 (was ok) tried w98 (was ok)  tried W98 SE (was ok)  and tried w2000  (stuck in endless loop),  tried Win ME   (and was ok)  it has upgraded usb drivers and network vs the other os'es ...  that's  now the limit

This scope (DPO5054) actually shipped with Windows 7 when it was new.  The OEM Windows license sticker on the back is for Windows 7 Ultimate.  Also, the original HD that I cloned is Win 7 and the latest deployment package does work on that.

I am just trying to reproduce what it came with onto a clean HD without doing a clone, in case of any personal data that may be on there.

There are no errors in Device Manager at all now.

That looks promising.  The original hard drive was 160 GB, and the disc says "for 500 GB hard drives".  I could put in a 500GB hard drive but it makes me worry why it says that!  Are there ISOs of these discs anywhere?  I am guessing it is OK to share those because vanilla Windows 7 ISOs have been available for download directly from Microsoft.

Hi,

Sometime ago I noticed this eBay Item. I found it intriging because applicable Instruments were not specified and I have a TLA7012 (Gen2 MB) with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit as OS and a 500 GB HDD. Came across another TLA7012. Also a Gen2 MB. This time with Windows XP as OS and a 160 GB HDD. BIOS Chip Versions of both TLA's were identical.

In the Instructions for that eBay Disk is stated: " Restoring the Operating System Using the OS Restore DVD's; Step 10 - Install the instrument product software " (Oscilloscope Application Software).

Tektronix used in the beginning with Windows based Instruments Hard Disk Images followed by installing Application Software. Later they use the words Restore Media and now Recovery Media. All followed by Application/Product Software installs as I see it. With all this you have a clean install.

not arguing with anyone BUT

If the @op start anew, there is tons of ways to get Win 7 sp1 iso's,    even i  can find them in a minute ... do a full re-install   etc ...   add the missing drivers ...

in the end  if tekscope does not start,  i still have doubts on the internal interfacing .... if everything is okay.    Tekscope if i recall is very picky. if it crash, it still means something is not right

I wanted to add a note that this is also a very useful resource for this scope:

https://github.com/exit-failure/tds7000

The option code tool here can decode your existing codes but not encode it back correctly.  If you spend some time debugging, it is possible to get the encoding to work without any secret codes or anything.  Just wanting to put people on the right path with this because I felt pretty hopeless for a while about getting the 16-channel digital input working.

Hi again,

" Sometime ago I noticed this eBay Item. I found it intriging because applicable Instruments were not specified. "

Must correct my conclusions. Found another Picture of this "intriging" 020-3110-00 Recovery Set. Two DVD's and indeed a list of applicable Instruments.
