Tektronix TDS7104: How to activate the Dallas NVRAM
« on: August 12, 2021, 08:28:57 pm »
Hello experts,

both of my Tektronix oscilloscopes were 9 years unused in the basement.
The Tektronix TDS684A beeped very loudly after switching on - defective.
Many of the more than 60 capacitors have expired.

Then I tried the second oscilloscope.
The Tektronix TDS7104 starts Windows 2000 without any problems, but the TekScope application remains
hang at the welcome graphic.

On the internet I discovered the notice that the battery on the NVRAM could be dead.
The battery was only 0.5V and I replaced it with a new 3V CR1632.
After switching on, the TekScope application still hangs on the welcome graphic.
The diagnostics LED rolled from Code 8 to L while it was switched on, remains there for a few seconds
and then started again from the beginning.

Allegedly the Dallas NVRAM needs to be reactivated.
I have no idea how to do that.
Is there a step-by-step guide on how to do this somewhere?

Regards
 Its Me

I already know this description.

* Serial interface to your host, or RS232-USB dongle
* Few wires for connecting PowerPC debug serial port
* Any terminal software which can work on serial port

First boot output with 9600 baud rate, 8N1 settings.

I don't know how to use that.

Johnny10 describes:
Access the VGA connector in back with separate monitor.
You need to install KILLCMOS application on floppy MS-DOS start-up disk.

The more I read the more confused  :-//  :-\ I am.

I have to admit, I misunderstood that, because this conversation was about the BIOS in the PC mainboard.

Now I come back to the instructions.
https://dev.xdevs.com/projects/csa7404/wiki/Wiki

So that you can connect to the MAX232 driver IC, you have to remove the main board from the PC.
The oscilloscope must be switched on to restore the boot parameters.
Now the next question arises for me again, whether after connecting and commissioning the
Oszis has to reconnect the PC main board. I can't actually imagine, because for the connection terminals
there is far too little space.

Does the RS232 connection have to be established as shown in the picture?

The serial interface is available on that right-angle box header at the right-hand edge of the PPC board.

Do you mean the console port framed in yellow?

If so - is it the standard assignment as follows?

Must rx and tx be crossed?

After an intensive search I was able to find the following website.
https://tomverbeure.github.io/2020/07/03/TDS420A-Serial-Debug-Console-Symbol-Table-Ghidra.html
This describes the pin assignment of the RS232 interface of the TDS420A.
Assuming that Tektronix uses the same pin assignment in the TDS7104, I used my three terminals
connected to GND, TDX and RDX (TDX and RDX crossed).
[ Specified attachment is not available ]

In the PC I was able to use Putty and the settings
Speed: 9600
Data bits: 8
Stop bits: 1
Parity: None
Flow Control: None
establish a successful connection.

That would be done. How are things going now?

Hi Jay,

I'm not sure. Can I do exactly the same with my TDS7104 as TiN does in its instructions?

Putty ready.
After switching on the oscilloscope for the first time, Windows 2020 could not be started. The monitor showed nothing. Putty recorded:

Re: Tektronix TDS7104: How to activate the Dallas NVRAM
« Reply #11 on: August 18, 2021, 08:40:46 am »
The battery may still be dead. Some of these scopes will re-configure the NVRAM automatically when this happens. If you have further boot issues, you may want to check it.

EDIT: flags (f)            : 0x1000
For the TDS7104 it is usually flags (f)            : 0x1008

Although I don't know what difference it makes...
