What kind of connector does the screen use? Nicer digitizers use capacitive screens, but unless you need gesture/multitouch support, I've seen test equipment with 4 wire resistive screens too.
I'd look for something with its own electronics, or with compatible ones available - something that interfaces with USB, for example, would likely to be very easy to integrate into a system and find drivers for, and you don't have to worry about interfacing with the existing board. Adding it is generally just sticking down the sensor panel to the top of the screen with thin double sided tape, fairly straightforward, but it does add some thickness to the screen and the screen needs to be very clean to apply and not get dust. Replacing phone/tablet digitizers goes the same way, so there are lots of tutorial videos that would be similar to the procedure.
You could also look for a replacement screen with a digitizer built in, not generally hard to find these days, but means the replacement you've already got doesn't count for much.
