Telefunken 6001 HIFI turntable - just checking a capacitor
« on: December 10, 2018, 06:26:00 pm »
Hey, guys ! Really excited about this one. :)
I got a 30 year old turntable and as I was playing along with it, the filtration capacitor on stroboscope blew up. (Not the only thing not working on it)
So, Iď like to kindly ask you what value the capacitor is. Sorry for such noob question, but Im trying to be really careful on this one, as I want it to become my first and only turntable. :) Seems to be kinda rare too.
My next problem Im trying to address is stuck lever for lovering the needle. Germans used a kind of lubricant, which became glue after the 30 years. It feels like sticky wax, but the damn plastic thing it glued feels like glued with epoxy. I cant afford to break the piece. any idea how to unstuck it ? I tried showing razor under it, but due to construction I can run it only under about 1/6 of the piece. Thanks for all help. :) Im surely going to be back with more questions, as I go along.

Try working some isopropyl alcohol into the hardened grease.  If that doesn’t soften it, let the ipa evaporate, and apply some heat from a hot air gun (or hair dryer), set on low. Be careful to not melt any plastic bits.

Wima MP 3 is a metallized paper capacitor they don't last forever, buy a new polypropylene capacitor instead, you can go up in voltage if you want 275 or 300Vac will be fine.

Alcohol such as isopropanol does not dissolve mineral oil very well and it is better to try white sprit or sprays such as WD40 or CRC 5-56, they are usually not aggressive to plastic parts.

So, progress report.
I had to disassemble rotary potentiometer for radio, as it was glued down with the same lubricant. I thought radio was not working due to loose rope.
Upon a closer inspection of the previous part I was talking about, I found out it has no plastic bits. Its a different color metal, which felt like plastic because of layer of the hardened lubricant stuck on it.
I took all and pot it into a cleaning solution I often use for various purposes and have laying around in garage. Potentiometer is close to being restored after couple hours of leaving it, but the needle lowering mechanism is still stuck. I will leave it overnight and see the result.
Anyways, After cleaning everything while it is disassembled, Im getting towards end of this rather easy restoration. :) Everything seems to work properly.
I have a slight issue with blown light bulbs. Again, I never saw this type of light bulb, so Im gonna ask you guys where to look for a replacement.
Im sorry, I have no information about the light bulbs other than a photo. Once I throw everything back together, I can measure on what voltage they run and etc.
Thank you for help and patience. :)

According to the service manual, those lamps are 14 volt, 80 ma “grain-o-wheat” types. The green color may either be a rubber sleeve, or a painted coating. I get those from electronic parts suppliers here in the USA, like Digikey or Mouser.

You are helping me a ton, guys ! :) I managed to break about another two light bulbs, while i was repairing the thing, but now it is quite usable. :)

Another question. What does this symbol means ? It is for speakers and when i connect regular speakers to it, it has different level of volume, perhaps lower highs as well, cant tell much.
I´d think its for a ... subwoofer ? But then there is still left and right channel for it...
And I dont understand what the linear option is for. It just chops off both high and low frequencies, making it sound like cheap Chinese radio.

It sounds awesome, though ! Ive been listening to radio for hours lately. :) About to order some Lp´s.
