Toshiba rdxv59dtkb VCR DVD HDD Combo
« on: January 12, 2023, 03:10:37 pm »
Hi All,

My friend has asked me to repair the above VCR DVD combo, it just flases the 3 lights shown and the yellow/green transformer/relay whatever it is just makes a squeak sound, the lights come on, then they go out and it repeats this, when you unplug the unit, the yellow/green thing makes a power down sound like an old CRT tv being switched off.

I have replaced the 1150 diode which i read up on, and started to replace the capacitors on the power board and its still exactly the same, just wondering if its fixable and where i can get the spare parts to replace if needed, it does the same thing if the power board is disconnected from the rest, or if it all connected to the rest of the unit.

I thought it could be capacitors as ive had this a few times on TV's and amplifiers which try to power on briefly then die due to capacitors not being strong enough to deliver the power needed.

Thanks all - Joe

Can be the capacitors or an overload on the secondary side.
Try the good old hairdryer method and heat the power supply area while running and see whether the behaviour changes.
With cold spray you can narrow down the number of suspects then.

I have tried heating it up, before my friend gave it me for repair, he tried to warm it up with a hairdryer and it worked for about 30 seconds then just flashed the power lights again, i have since tried this method and it doesent work, i started to replace the capacitors but after doing nearly all of them except 3 or 4 it still does the same thing, just a noise from the yellow/green thing, looks like a transformer of some kind.

Thanks - Joe

It is the transformer and is the thing that is separating the dangerous 240 volt mains input voltage from all the metalwork and AV I/O sockets. Touching anything inside the area bounded by the white line to the right of the upside down "COLD" in your final photo could kill you.

Yeah i know, i regularly repair electronics, just this vcr dvd combo im struggling with, ive 2 Xbox Series S (hdmi ecoder and a hdmi port), Samsung q60 4k 55" tv, Aiwa FX77k VCR, 3 laptops, and a mazak Mazatrol fx702 video output board in for repair at the moment, its just this bloody video/dvd player, im running out of components to replace without buying another huge load in, plus he's a life time friend not just someone who wants something repaired so i thought id give it a go :) as long as i get this player working before i do suckle upon 240v i dont mind  :-DD

Ive read the manual, so ill start working through this list of components, i only have a basic multimeter and a capacitor tester, my honda accord was stolen with my LCR meter in and everything else i had in there, but i should be able to get a good idea of values.

Check if there is short circuit on the rectifying diode and the circuit in each rectifying circuit of secondary side, and
replace P1(AV ASSEMBLY) or P4(PW/SW ASSEMBLY) if defective. (D013, D014, D016, D018, D019, D1031, D1032,
