I don't remember exactly, but the problematic connections were in the little shielded output box. I'm sure it had a lot to do with kids yanking on cords out of frustration that caused the issue.

Mine was on the inside of the game console but it is exactly as you say... just one of those external game console switch modules that allows you to switch between channel 3/4... mine just happens to be located inside the console itself. I took the switcher cap off and that led me to the dodgy connections.
