Trying to recover TDS5034B OS
« on: October 06, 2023, 04:16:22 am »
I recently purchased a TDS5034B with a broken hard drive. I replaced the hard drive but I cant seen to get a working OS from the internet. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

The P/N for the disk is 063-3693-01 if that helps.

Thanks.  :)

Is there any chance of repairing the HDD? What are its symptoms?

Did you see this site?

What is the model of the hard drive? Does it spin up? Does it click or make any bad noises?

It's a Hitachi Deskstar HDS722580VLAT20.
When I turn it on, I hear a click or two and then it starts spinning. Around when the error shows up, I hear 2 sets of 4 "buzzing(?)" sounds.

How are you deploying that image to the hard drive? I'm able to restore it using a Ghost 11.5 bootable CD and it boots fine after the mergeide fix.

The specific version is important because the file format changed several times over the years and later releases of Ghost won't recognize the image.

I hate these proprietary disc images. Why not just make a sector-by-sector image and then compress it if need be? Then we wouldn't need Ghost or any other garbage.

So... I purchased a CPU cooler (the old one was broken) and it just arrived so I thought this would be a good time to install it. Now the scope doesn't post.  :palm:
I used a bit of force to get the retention clips off. It's the first time I'm using this type of cooler mount so I'm not sure if I damaged the motherboard. The board did flex a bit but I don't know if that's normal.

When I turn it on, the fans start spinning and after a few seconds I hear a single beep.
Looking at a service guide, the beep means a "refresh failure". Whatever that means.

I'll try that and maybe I will put a new battery in later.

Anyway, I took out the board again and reseated all the connections. This time, it didn't even beep and it had an orange power button.

I thought I smelled smoke so I unplugged it immediately. I think I see a few caps that are leaking so that might be the problem.

I feel like I'm digging myself deeper and deeper here...

I suggest taking the motherboard out of the scope and approaching it like you would a PC. Try it without any peripherals, substitute the power supply, RAM, CPU, etc. Check the CMOS battery voltage, replace with new if it's low. Use an external monitor: once you reset the CMOS memory, you'll likely lose the scope's internal display until you switch the video card over to PCI in BIOS.

Intel motherboards in this series are known for having bad capacitors as well as a some other power-related problems. Here are a couple of references for inspiration: http://www.dasarodesigns.com/projects/a-quick-fix-for-tektronix-tla5000-series-logic-analysers/ and youtube.com/watch?v=1h6SFR2Wn6s

If worst comes to worst and you can't fix the original motherboard, it can be replaced with a contemporary board with the same connector layout.
