Unknown component
« on: July 26, 2021, 11:54:03 pm »
I am attempting to repair a Asus Z97 MB. I had a puff of blue smoke from a component. Does anyone know the component I need to replace, pic attached

That's a resistor network, going by the number on it I'd say it's a 0 ohm network, ie a set of jumpers. What caused it to burn up? Jumpers don't just fail, something resulted in an excessively high current at which point that device acted as a fuse.

thanks for that. Not sure why it smoked, the pc has been in storage for a while and there seemed to be some corrosion on one of the pins. I am ok at re-soldering so what am I ordering on Ali-express to replace it. Do you think this would prevent the machine posting? Thanks

Are you sure the puff of smoke didn't come from the package to its right? That's most likely a transient voltage suppressor (TVS diode array) and that's a device I'd expect to smoke itself if the wrong thing went into the USB port that it's connected to. A zero ohm resistor array is probably going to be a relatively tough customer.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

That looks like a DC-DC converter, assuming it drives the nearby inductor.

It's best to view the part in the context of its surroundings, but if I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that its manufacturer was ON Semiconductor, or maybe Richtek.

Can you show us a more complete picture of the board?

BTW, there is a possibility that Vin has punched through to Vout, in which case their may be additional damage downstream. Can you measure the resistance between the inductor and ground?

Why are you trying to open it with Fritzing? It says it's for Boardview which is a different program.

Fritzing is garbage IMO, I have no idea how it got as popular as it did, the sooner it dies the better.
