Title: UT171B Calibration
Post by: JBR1 on June 29, 2023, 07:11:00 pm
I need your help concerning where can I get the Service Manual for UT171B Multimeter and how to do the Calibration process? Not getting any answer from UNI-T so far. Thanks

Hi,
Many thanks for the  Service Manual.

Any idea how to calibrate the UNI-T 171B multimeter or the calibration procedure? Any software to be used?

So far I have not received any response from the manufacturer UNI-T answering my emails and indicating where I can send the multimeter to be serviced.

It seems to me a bad commercial policy for a manufacturer the size of UNI-TREND not to provide repair and calibration services for the instruments they sell, at least in EU.

This should be something to rethink, if we want cheap low accuracy devices without any post sales support or pay a little more and have a certified device with after sales service and support.

Thanks

Try talking to the store you bought it from. If you bought it as a consumer from an EU store and it's showing a defect within two years, then the store is required to fix it or give you your money back. Even outside that window it doesn't hurt to talk to the store. They might have a service contact. Though you'll probably have to pay.

I know it's hindsight, but looking forward I think we as consumers should do some research in the support of both the store and manufacturer that we buy from. I've never looked into Uni-T, but I don't think they were known to have great service or documentation.

This. Uni-T is in fact a large manufacturer, but of relatively inexpensive gear targeted at a certain value-oriented demographic. I think their stuff works quite well for it's price range and it's target audience, but it would not be considered professional level gear where regular calibration would be sought out. The calibration in most cases would cost more than the device, sometimes several times more -- to the point you consider the equipment disposable and buy another rather than keep it calibrated (not exactly environmentally conscious, I get it, but that's reality). So there's probably not a big market for Uni-T calibration services because most people buying those devices are not the people that would seek and be willing to pay the costs of calibration, not to mention the margins on these cheap products probably don't allow for for much built-in calibration capability beyond what's required to ship it initially. Sure, some cheap meters come with trimmer pots but that's likely more for manufacturing convenience on the assembly line than for end-user convenience.
