Video card repair - Beeeeeep Beep Beep Beep!
« on: April 02, 2019, 01:17:09 pm »
Been given a non working ASUS STRIX GeForce GTX 970 which gives a video post error of 1 Long 3 Short. It apparently was working fine when removed but it's former owner could not get it to post so has moved on.

I'm initially suspecting power requirements, noticed it has only an 8 pin power connector, a solid white led near that was on. The specs say up to 225W, not sure how much of that to post. The current card I have installed requires 250W on an 8+6 pin connector and works fine.

Havn't torn it down yet, am looking at picking up a PCI extender, how long can I reliably go? Any good brands?
Got any ideas on what to try out on this card first?

They came with proper length already
pretty much well built ive seen... from Aliex

Besides you can power it up with external PSU
with proper CV/CC modes limits which will by all means
help in case of some dead short not seen (wo the foldback of ATX)

There is not a huge list - the top 3 should be fine

and for the record - if you are serious about the beeps (no jokes)
the typical 1L + 3S only  fits AMI memory error

but that changes  **ALOT** including among vendors /versions

best guess

According to the ASUS EFI BIOS the beep code is - no VGA detected (which makes sense). The PC still boots past it just without any video.

The history of the card suggests it isn't faulty, but this is the second system it won't post in now. I'm going to perform a bios update on this motherboard and also try see if it will post in a newer motherboard just to be sure it's a real fault I'm looking at.

I had a look at PCI extenders and I will start with a cheap USB cable variety, I assume bandwidth isn't going to be an issue anyway. If you or anyone else have a suggestion or link to good extender for repair type work please post it. I need something to make it a little easier to work on.

Check again ... carving some tip if that BIOS is not from one of the
3 great ones..  AMI Award or Phoenix...

Usually ASUS, ECS, MSI, Gigabyte they don't write BIOS.
They use those 3 big players ready ones. Which btw are
always updated on a regular basis on their web... (the pcb fabs)

It helps just in case you want to follow the beeps.
Otherwise a POST card is far more reliable

as suggestions .. they are pretty much same
regarding good construction and no fab defects..

cheapos are always 50% chance.. but they do work just fine

and if you have no real clue on the UEFI thing about the BIOS vendor

but you have access to a decent OS you will find that handy sometimes

host@\> dmidecode | grep Vendor
     Vendor:  Award Software International, Inc.

the thing is really crammed into  the flash

the fancy UEFI screens are just for the sake of the eyes...

It's made by AMI according to the updated ASUS EFI BIOS I downloaded.

It's 100% no VGA detected. Not only is it written clearly in the manual I have another identical motherboard that detects another faulty GPU and gives the same post beep code. Both motherboards are working perfectly and have been running for several years without fault and only produce this code when a suspect GPU is inserted.

You will find it eventually by googling as well.

Oh well another uneventful ending didn't have to pull it apart, ending up being slightly dirty contacts. Posted immediately and tested it for roughly 8hrs and didn't skip a beat. Didn't even get to make my test rig. >:(

I never trust the beeps.

They have changed the codes so much in last decades
making that a challenging puzzle.  I rather prefer
to stick a POST card which is far more reliable.

Even though the  "memory errors"  also appears
since the advent of the UMA design. The IGPU shared
memory always triggers that whatever problem it founds
being dirty, bad clock or just another thing.

the beeps will not issue a "video error" (aka IGPU) instead they
will point to the "(shared) IGPU memory error" not being able
to distinguish that allocated pool

Good POST cards will not do that simplification
