vlelectroniclab:
hi,
I have a voltcraft vc960 multimeter that I bought new in 2013, when it arrived I put a 9v lithium battery and it lasted for 6/7 years before I had to replace it.
then I put some Duracell batteries but it didn't last more than a few years.
I had put it aside because I had bought a fluke 28ii, but now I need another multimeter and I took it back.
I put a new battery and it lasts very little, it doesn't even last a month.
I checked the current it consumes and I found some anomalies.
off 0ma
on in vdc or mv 4.5ma
on in all other functions 9/10ma
automatic shutdown after 10 minutes 1.5mA!!! :palm:
can someone compare these data?
thanks

Does anyone know the current consumption of multimeters with 9v battery?
coromonadalix:
they will vary upon brands,  if some have real time clocks in them or not  etc ...

be patient      and pls  don't popup / bump  too often

the dmm chipset datasheet says this dmm chip will consume between 1 - 1.7 ma,  if you add the lcd driver and others  it should be around this value you mentioned

1 month for an 9v cell if it is used often  is good,  some don't even last like this ...  but an 9v cell is not as strong as AA  batteries,
some of them have 6x AAA  inside ...

Around    4 ma    Amprobe AM-140     9vdc

On my Fluke 88 it is very similar. My Fluke 77/4 only has a few uA after auto shutdown.

This maybe due to a good Lithium battery vs an alkaline. They have approx 50% more energy and better shelf life compared to alkaline .In addition temperature does not affect them as much as alkaline.

While the meter may be faulty (1.5ma in Auto shutoff seems a bit high ,many meters consume as much when active) ,I'm wondering if that is due to a bad battery.
