Wavetek 111 VCG - looking for instruction manual > Ver.1
« on: June 17, 2020, 07:57:14 am »
There is a Version 1 (1967) instruction manual on-line for the Wavetek 111 voltage controlled generator.  It's a good manual with all part and cal descriptions, and schematics.

I appear to have a later version 111, with higher revision pcbs.  Would anyone have available a later version instruction manual?

I am not able to calibrate the squarewave generator over the main frequency dial range with 50% duty cycle, and the dial setting control DCVs are not in spec at one end.  My 111-118C VCG board has an extra trimpot, so I am just starting to work through what may be out of whack, and what the extra trimpot does, and its always helpful to see the latest doc revision!

Well well, for a circa 1970 item of equipment it was sad to see that nearly every carbon composite resistor had drifted at least +10%, and most were way over that.

I should a least be glad that many resistors were precision RN60, so I only had to bulk replace about 50 resistors - but still not a pleasant view started to form as more and more resistors were checked.

I still couldn't get better than 0.65% THD (0.5% spec level) once the main boards were all trimmed for operation, so will leave it at that unless a later instruction manual shows up.

Love those generators. Very interestingly designed. Beautiful finish on knobs, perfect placement for all switches and small form factor.
Have few of those, including 111. Have to check though because I may have a spare one with one of the boards missing inside.
There is a lot of ppl buying Power Design power supplies for their looks.... and performance. I think those Wavetek generators are their own category. I mean... there are better ones, with more buttons and screens... but there is nothing like a good big knob.
If you could please post the manual you have for it it would be awesome.

I recently restored a Wavetek 154 - that is more 'up market', and being made about a decade later in manufacture it hasn't suffered the same resistor demise.

The 110 - 111 series was likely a mainstay in University electronics labs for decades, due to that size form factor and the main big knob.  But the need for an extender board to do pretty much any fault-finding, and to make many trimpot adjustments is a pain.  I had to make up plug-able links for the main board.  In comparison, the 154 comes with a handy extender board bolted to the inside side wall - very handy!

Hi

I have a Wavetek 111 paper manual revision 1-68.  The VCG schematic is version 111-218L

Hi George, the on-line manual has VCG schematic as 111-218, dated 11-4-1966.  Sounds like your manual has later updates  :scared:

Hi All

I have attached  scan of the VCG board schematic.  The manual is a pain for me to scan as some of it is almost "A3" and I have to photocopy a page first to two by A4 and then scan the two pages.

Thanks George.  Just a few ECN's to that VCG drawing!  And the calibration procedure has certainly been tweaked, especially for the VCG section.  I guess that is the value of initial production feedback.
