Title: WEP 853D Rework Station low temp
Post by: ajp8868 on July 03, 2020, 07:30:33 pm
Hi all,

After trying to fix an Xbox I've realised that my rework station is not getting to the temperatures displayed on the screen. It seems to think it's getting to 480 degrees C, but an infrared thermometer reads about 120-130. I've had a look inside and nothing is obviously blown or open/short circuit.. what should I be looking to check first? Does anybody have one I could compare the thermister ohm readings with?

Cheers,
Adam

:palm: First learn how the infrared thermometer works and how to use it properly. And nope, you cannot measure an air temperature with it. Also it will not work properly on most of glossy surfaces, especially metals.

Oh :-[ maybe it is working then! What can I use to measure the temperature of the air gun?

You need a thin unsheathed thermocouple with it's end slightly inserted into a nozzle and not touching it's walls. Also airflow rate should be set to a higher end to mitigate measurement imperfections.

Something like this:

BTW I don't suggest setting temperature above 400oC on such Chinese stations. Heater is prone to fail within minutes of operation when you set maximum temperature.
