What blew up?
« on: March 11, 2018, 09:36:27 pm »
A friend posted a picture on FB earlier asking what component broke on his DC power supply. The symbol has me thinking resistor but the leads look too long and have me confused. Thought I would bring it to you all and see what you thought.

Aditional shots...

Possibly an NTC to limit the inrush current. It would be in series with the fuse. A varistor (MOV) would be between L and N to absorb over voltage peaks.

As mentioned, a non-linear resistor to limit inrush current. If you are replacing a NTC make sure you check the other parts around it to make sure you don't blow the new part as well.

The clue s was n the labelling...... RT1 ....... "Resistor Thermal 1"

As others have stated it is likely an NTC varistor.

Such parts often fail for a good reason.
