What is this Tektronix-like Oscilloscope?
« on: May 06, 2018, 09:27:15 pm »
This is oscilloscope I got in a lot of about a dozen assorted from ebay, maybe 20 years ago. It has no markings on it indicating model or manufacturer, other than "made in England" on the back. It's color is tetkronix-blue, andlooks like an old 2 channel analog tek scope. Anybody know what it is?
It turns on and sort of works (see 60 Hz pick-up in the photo). I think I'll put it on craigslist, but want to give an honest assessment. What do you think a good price would be?.. $50?

Hi. It's a Telequipment . I don't know the model [Edit: Probably a D75] but the timebase plug-in is an S2A Dual sweep... https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/telequip_dual_sweep_plug_in_s2a.html

Yep the S2A timebase gives gives the game away; Telequipment.
They were bought by Tektronix and continued to trade as Telequipment, a division of Tek.

Member bd139's mum used to assemble them.

Bit more info here:

BTW a D83 manual with V4 and S2A plugins give a lot of the info needed to repair these.
Just where the mainframe manual free is another thing.

Found it.  :)

Thanks!
from the wiki
"Telequipment (aka "TQ" in Tek-Internal abbreviation) was a British oscilloscope manufacturer, acquired by Tektronix in the early 1970s and run as a subsidiary to provide a lower-cost alternative to Tektronix' main product lines.

At the time, Tektronix made almost exclusively laboratory-grade industrial models, whereas Telequipment produced scopes designed primarily for the TV service market. As a consequence, TQ models had TV vertical and horizontal trigger settings, a feature only introduced in Tek products in the T900-series scopes (except for some 400-series and 7K-series "option 5" models). "

Never heard of them before today. Looks like a poor man's Tektronix. I can tell the quality is not the same. Since I have a 465 (needs some repair), I'll probably sell this one as a project for someone else :-BROKE. Interesting that it has a 'plug-in', I could theoretically get a differential amp for it.

Don't make the error of thinking TQ stuff was substandard especially the later ones when they had $ from the sale to Tek. The D83 and D75 are the same scope just the D75 is in horizontal format and has a bit smaller CRT than the D83.
These with plugins are a dream to service and I had a D83 for several years. (sold long ago  :()
My D83's display was as crisp and sharp as any CRO I've seen and considerably better than most.

Yes they have their weak points like any TE but due to the design of using 'off the shelf' componentry they're relatively simple to keep running.
Main area to watch is EHT (NOT PDA) where the high resistance caps drift or go open and along with that will be many of the Ecaps that are getting a fair age now.
The D83 is probably the only CRO I'd want if I was to keep one.

In good running condition yours is worth at least $1/MHz and with a pair of cheapy 100 MHz probes ($15) and the manual on CD a few $ more.

If you have repair experience these are a good scope to learn about CRO's because of their (relatively) simple design, construction, linear PSU and an excellent manual.
Whack the covers off and pull the plug-ins and have a look around before you give up on this one.

Start a repair thread, I'll help and probably bd139 too. We both like TQ stuff.  :)

Tekwiki has an entry for the D75.

One big problem it that the "transparent" time base dial is so crazed and foggy you can't see the numbers underneath. I looks like it could fall apart too. I doubt a replacement is available.
