Wire bonding repair services in Europe???
« on: August 12, 2016, 05:48:45 pm »
Hello,

Does anyone know of a company/university in Europe that provides wire bonding repair services, I have a CMOS image sensor I was modifying to mono and a tool slipped and cut 3 gold wires connecting the die to the package  :-BROKE .

ps. If the company/university is in Finland that would be even better.

Thanks
Oscar

IIRC there is one in Oulu, Finland. I'll check and reply if I find it.

Hi Oscar which sensor you using?

A little OT...but I understand what your doing.   You have any friends in the military in electronics...Avionics micro min?  Even potting the bond wires can cause them to break (shrinkage of some compounds).

We are following the project Cam86 Astro camera using ICX453AQ oneshot but intend to take the coverslip off and make a few mono.  Originally started as Cam84 (actually started earlier on other cameras) by Vakulenko and Hippie but has morphed into further iterations of design.

Luis Cupido is really into wire bonding.  Don't know if he does repairs for others or not.

I think he's in Portugal.

I'm using a Nikon D5100 sensor, the modification has been done here http://kuulapaa.com/home/astrophotography/index.html , I won't actually use any kind of potting since I have already cleaned the bayer filter from the sensor, I had made a "stencil" from polycarbonate that covered the gold wires, and I already have a new antireflective, high transmission optical glass ready to be placed.

No friends in those areas.

What's the bond wire's size? If it is 4 mil or thicker, and you can send it to the US, then I might be able to help you.
We can bond high current 4+mil aluminum wires on aluminum, gold, copper or nickel surfaces using our German Hesse heavy wire bonding machine.
We do have a thin gold wire bonding machine, but I cannot operate it, and it is not in our lab so if you insist, I have to charge you for the service.

Not sure the exact size, but I can say that it is thinner than a human hair. I will see if I can't find anything in Europe and contact you.

I am not sure, but Vaisala and VTT had some IC manufacturing some years ago. Possibly some universities have precision equipment related to IC manufacturing/testing.

Yes, he's in Portugal.

He has done repairs for others in the past - depends on whether the repair is economically viable.

He did some repair work for me, but wouldn't repair the same device again as far as I know.  In terms of the cost of parts required and his overhead, it would be cheaper to buy a good used device.

If he can and is willing to do the work, I can certainly recommend him.

Orin.

I was contacted by Luis Cupido and he might be able to help, he needed a high-res picture to check the damage and he will contact me again.

So thank you edpalmer42 for the info.

plazma if you find the company in Oulu that would also be great for future projects.

Can't someone use epoxy to cover the wire bonds before the operation?

I see what looks like die damage in the first image, near the pads with the missing bond wires. :(

What you see is the layers of the Bayer Filter/microlenses removed and some leftovers on the sides, the layers were removed using a car paint polishing/repair cream, basically cream that has very fine abrasive/chemicals and an image sensor cleaning bud, you can find more info on the procedure here kuulapaa.com/home/astrophotography/nikond5100mod.html , I also have a timelapse video of it.

Alexander.

The guy that made the instructions for the this sensor mod did use epoxy, but my mind was telling me that there might be some contraction of the epoxy during the curing process that might cut some of the wires anyway so I didn't apply any epoxy, although he has made this mod to many cameras with success. The wires where actually broken while I was removing the cover glass of the sensor, during the Bayer filter/microlens removal I didn't have any problem as I was taking it slowly and I also found an easier/safer way the protect the wires, I cut I polycarbonate the size of the original cover glass and then cut a window on the middle roughly the size of the active area of the sensor, some hot glue to the corners and no need to worry that much about the wires.

Alexander.

The person that is going to make the repair for me is coming back from vacation in the next few days, and then I'm going to send it to him, he said he will most likely be able to repair it.

Out of curiosity I just visited Luis Cupido's webpage.

 :o  :o  :o

And I thought *I* was a mad amateur!!!

He truly deserves my deepest respect: both at work (University) and hobby, he is really doing what he loves.

 :-+

@OP: Hope you get your sensor fixed. Was looking at the webpage with the mod and the pictures... Great stuff!

Regards
