Xbox 360 E USB Bypass Capacitor
« on: February 01, 2021, 12:00:23 am »
Hi all,

I'm in the process of repairing a friend's Xbox 360 E. The unit wouldn't power on at all and some corrosion by the USB ports led my investigation there. I discovered that the 5 V and GND pins for the USB ports were shorted. I desoldered the (what I assume from googling is a 100 nF bypass cap) and the unit now powers on normally and the short had been removed.

I assume I need to replace this capacitor. So my question is: any ideas on what an exact value might be or some best guesses as to the value? My DE-5000 says it's reading 1.5 pF but I'm not putting too much stock in that reading as I believe the cap is faulty, to begin with.

I attached a mediocre image from my phone in case that can help provide any more helpful context/info.

Thanks!

Best,
Matt

You can desolder capacitor from another USB port and measure it. IMHO it should be 4.7uF at least, If nearby electrolytic cap is used for USB, it may have lower capacitance though. In any case, value is not critical.

Good info, thanks. I have an SMD capacitor book on the way so I'll try a 4.7 uF (or similar). Thanks!
