Yamaha 7.2 surround DTS chip
« on: September 30, 2020, 09:55:08 pm »
Hey all

So I have a Yamaha rxv673 7.2 surround sound receiver that has been loyal for the past 6-7 years and has just started playing up, its a great system and I dont want to have to replace it as its still got everything I need!

Started off popping and cracking when first turned on and seamed to work fine once it warmed up.

Anyway its got worse and worse then I finally had a google and found a guy who fixed it temporary by baking in the oven as he thought it might be a bad solder joint - but in the end it kept getting worse until tracked it down to the DTS chip - chip code - d80yk113cptp4

Photo of my board below with the suspected offending chip highlighted below.
Video of other guys repair and blerb here;

I gave it a go, desoldered the electronic cap, 200c in the oven for 15 mins and its working perfect! - I am now guessing that its going to go the same way as this guys and need the chip replacing so want to plan for that next!

Anyway, I am a confident yet complete amature but replacing that kind of chip looks way beyond my cave man ability!

What can you advise? If it starts sh1tt1ng the bed again is there anything else I should try or should I just send it off to get the chip replaced?

If its best to just send off to get it replaced, where would you recommend and what could I expect to pay?

As always - many thanks!

The ONLY option to get your amp fixed is to replace a new DSP chip.  Even you buy a new chip to replace same problem
occurs after several  years, however .   :palm: :wtf:  Why? The chips with serial number d80yk113cptp4 produced by TI before 2012 have flaws that servicing tech. wIll not tell you.  This flaw has been quoted in a TI document. :palm:

What you can do is:
(1)Seek a smart phone technician to help you to desolder the DSP chip.  Ask him to use low temp. Soldering paste to solder the chip.  This chip can be easily replace by yourself  once it becomes bad.  :-//
(2)NEVER use DTS-HD & DOLBY TRUE-HD when this chip is in HDMI board.  :palm: Use ONLY dts/dts-es/dts-96/24 due to low freq-mode in S/PDIF format. |O :wtf: :blah:

(2)  servicing tech.  will not tell you. :palm:    If  you follow (2)  rule,  your HDMI  DSP chip  work well before  you  die.

Interesting coincidence. Someone gave me a supposedly broken RX-A720 the other day, and what do you know, it has the exact same DSP chip! In fact, the entire digital board looks identical to the one in the attachment in this thread. Though I can't find a manufacturing date, the date codes on the components suggest late-2012. Haven't been able to decipher the date on the DSP.

I haven't thoroughly tested the unit yet, just had it sitting on the bench playing FM radio all day just fine, and the capacitors in it seem healthy. In other words, "no fault found" so far.

Does this problem only crop up in HDMI mode? I will of course be testing the HDMI functionality when I get around to it.
