Yamaha AV receivers
« on: February 07, 2021, 12:27:12 am »
I have noticed that there are generally a couple Yamaha receiver repair threads per week.  Only occasionally are there are Denon, Marantz, Pioneer, Onkyo, or Sony threads.

What inference should I be making here?

  • People love their Yamaha receivers and are more likely to repair a broken unit than other brands that get tossed as e-waste.
  • Yamaha outsells the other brands combined by a large margin.  Perhaps they have better global distribution?
  • Yamaha units aren't as reliable as their competion over the long term

The more a brand has been sold,  the more you'll see them ?

But  Sony and Denon Pioneer  have/had sv manuals leaked or made available easier than other brands ??

In my youth, i've seen more Sony been repaired than other brand,  we could get parts for very old sound/video systems of modules / component systems in the 15 years of age some parts where still available.

Now  no companies hold parts for long,  you buy and trash things more often, now its consuming times and practices  i hate the most.

I have an old 80-82  Sony TC-K71 casette deck, and a huge cassette collection ( high end casettes ) this deck is incredible, redone completly the psu, the noise floor has dropped radically,  i'm converting them to MP3 at 320 kbs,   no companies have beaten this model

The Sony Esprit series at the time was an excellent pick.

The Yamaha high end sound systems where hard to beat, the dsp a1000 a the time was a reference.

Onkyo : where okay but so so ...  may have changed

Marantz : saw many equipment over rated at the time,  an supposed Hi-fi  high end model  was not as advertised, was an class A-B amplifier, and was sold as Class A ....  was on the shelf a very long time :(

Mitsubishi : in their vcr was very deceptive, their high end SVHS did not had parts available after an year IE: U80 U82

Pioneer : where good in the high end stuff,  not for the normal customer, seen  high end  full copper casing models (can't recall the serie) beaten by a mere 200$ Sony cd player,  a fist bang on the bench, the sony played perfectly, and the Pioneer skipped,  saw many angry clients at the time for theses players.

Sansui :  saw tons of sh@#$   but some big / high power amplifiers where incredible, and build like a tank.

Hitachi : they had made some really good tv's at the time,  saw and repaired tons of vcrs (the clutch kit) did not last long.

I repaired  lots of brand in the past,  now if i have to choose   i would go for some of the older brand and models ...

But the choice factor would be :  is there an SV manuals available for them,  if not    eh  i dont by them

The biggest problem for me :  is the obsolescence of many electronic equipment, nothing last long,  i had stuff who lasted 15-20 years without repairs.

Now  5 years after purchase  you dump them

In Canada  that's what i saw or did,  in other countries or continent(s),  other brand(s) where more popular.

most popular
Sony, Hitachi, Pioneer, Mitsubishi, Sanyo, Samsung, Technics (mostly the turn tables)

less popular
Realistic ---  many where made by Sanyo
Jutan International Limitted  --- oh boy  (JIL)  total crap
Carver
Onkyo
Marantz
Koss ---  they did make very good shelf speakers that i have after 20 years, and made some incredible walkman
Bang and Olufsen
Zenith

My 2 cents   :-+

I did warranty service for Yamaha, Onkyo, Sony, Harman Kardon, Pioneer, Marantz and Denon.

Yamaha was better designed, more serviceable by far, at least as well built as any of them.

Reliability was at least on par with any of them; keeping in mind a large percentage of service problems were customer caused.

I did a lot of that  stuff as well ...

One brand forgotten worth mention here: Technics (aka Panasonic division)

Their stuff is by far IMHO reliable repairable and good quality.

"Brands" above their price/quality I would list Sansui and Crown.
Both are good although hard to repair (lack of parts) and last not very as long

SANYO unfortunately vanished in the void
