Title: Yamaha RX-V483 PS2 fault
Post by: nsbenz on November 19, 2018, 03:09:12 pm
I have a receiver that went into protection mode.  When I start the receiver in diagnostic mode I see the error PS2 PRT: 0089 show on the display.  I can not find any service manuals on this.  Any idea what to check?

Thanks,
Neil

Very cryptic - you do need the proper manual or close that to decipher

In general terms  PRV PRD are POWER error codes
all other codes will tell you where the fault is.

Like this other one..

and THEY ALL DIFFER so you need some proper error table
bad consistency from Yamaha on this issue

Hi-Fi Engine has the manual. You have to register but it's free.

Your code means:

PS2 PRT: 089 (I suspect you typed 1 zero to much)

Please share your manual, I checked mine and copied the above!

Additional:
Cause: The voltage in the power supply section is
abnormal.
Supplementary information: The protection function
worked due to a defect or overload in the power supply.

Turning on the power without correcting the abnormality
will cause the protection function to work in 1 seconds
and the power supply will be shut off.

I just copied all this from the manual of your receiver (5min work) -> now we need your photo's and schematics what you checked and what is found.

PS1/PS2/PS3

Power supply voltage (PS) protection detection.
The voltage at 96 pin (PS1_PRT)/97 pin (PS2_
PRT)/98 pin (PS3_PRT) of IC22 are displayed.

Voltage detects
PS1: AC_BL, AC_12, ±7A, +3.3S
PS2: ±12A, +5A, +5VID, +3.3T, +41F
PS3: +5.5V

Normal value
PS1: 29 to 118
PS2: 135 to 191
PS3: 132 to 168

(Reference voltage: 3.3 V=255)

* If PS1, PS2 or PS3 becomes out of the
normal value range, the protection function
works to turn off the power.

Check every power supply line you can find. +12, +5, -5, whatever. My guess you'll find one voltage low or missing.

My 2 cents check (probably they are broken -> they measure nothing and should measure):
R5225 - 12K (in -12V line)
R5224 - 12K (in +12V line)
R5223 - 1.2K (in GND/common if I switfly looked)

If this is OK, then measure the output here:
IC523 = 12V
IC524 = -12V

Here is the manual, I will try and test the voltage.

I've done a really fast guess based on the error code only
which sometimes may be triggered by other issues...

I would start right there on the PS2 output section

this  place would be a good start point

thanks for the manual.. it helps

By the way, refer to the service manual regarding the Protection Cancel start-up option.

Incredibly useful for troubleshooting.
