zip250 does not power up.
« on: March 08, 2021, 05:36:36 pm »
I followed your blog on how to get the covers off. Very helpful, however the gray cover gets brittle over time so pieces came off without much force. Also there are pin holes around cover that can aid in taking off cover.
But my problem is it's dead. I tried many cables to make sure it's not that. I made sure gears are not bound. It sounded like for a brief moment that the motor tried to work. Soldering looks secure, no burnt parts. of course my eject button does not work, have to use paper clip to get disc out. I'm thinking the motor is dead? It's been sitting around for 10 years. I just want to get it going to read some discs I have.

Thanks so much.

Which one do you have? The parallel port unit or the USB unit? How is it powered, I am guessing an external wall wart 5vdc at 1 amp or so? Most of those ZIP drives just went click,click,click,......... when they died. Sadly I sold my external ZIP250 drive and the only one I still own is a ZIP100 internal drive that I have mounted into a removable hard drive caddy. Maybe your wall wart power pack is dead or has a bad power lead. Can you check voltage on the ZIP250 control board?
