Annything better then the Youyue 858D+ out there?
« on: March 12, 2015, 04:04:10 am »
Hello!
I think i am about to cave, reluctantly i can see a hot air station in my future.  :(
Mainly to desolder small parts, connectors and to solder the odd QFN/DFN chip.
Only used sparingly, it will sit in the corner most of the time.

I was delighted to see that the Youyue 858D+ is fairly cheap (42 Euros, locally) and seems to be not that bad.
I have seen daves video, dit a google and forum search for reviews.

There are a few terrible things about this tool but it should be good enough.
Annything better out there that i have not seen? About 40 Euros is the maximum i could spend.

Greetings,
Peter

I have the YIHUA ( or as Dave would say it - yeeeehaw ) 858D and it works very well, I got it for 53EUR, i checked mine and it seems very nicely built and without any the problems of the cheaper ones.

I just got a Yihua 858D myself for $50 USD shipped.  Mine came with the IC extraction tool, 3 nozzles and a spanner and a spare heater element.  Just received it yesterday.  Haven't used it yet, just opened it up and checked that the wiring is proper.  I did turn it on and it got hot, blew air and went into 'sleep' mode when placed back on the stand.  I will update after playing with it, hopefully before the weekend is out.  It will be fun desoldering SMD components on a $2,000 motherboard that was replaced under warranty  :-+

I don't care if I never work on SMD stuff with mine. Just having a good tool for heatshrink is worth it for me! :)

If you haven't purchased one just yet, try and find Quick brand (957 <pic is wrong, see below> or 957D best fit your budget). Alibaba, DHgate, ... might be your best bet for 220V versions. They may exceed your budget slightly, but really are well constructed IME (enough to justify the cost increase IMHO). For disclosure, I own an 861DW.

Another alternative would be a Pro's Kit 969.

+1, don't forget cool looking compared to a heat gun.  :-DD.  The heat gun from the home gets to go back in the garage where it belongs.

Thanks but that one is about double.
Looks like the cheap one will have to do, i just ordered one.
Solderpaste, the boards i will have to make and the dreadful QFN/DFN chips ill have to order and test create overhead :)

I do not think this new tool will make my heat gun go into early retirement.
There is still enough to do for the "big gun" :)

Another good use for the SMD rework station i found out today is drying super glue, makes it dry in seconds and saves me quite some time.  :-+
You have to careful though, because when those fumes get in your eyes........ talkin' about chopping onions but 100X stronger.

So... i spend a bit of time today playing with my new hot air tool.
The box says "858+", the unit says "858" and it looks slightly different from the units on the internet.

The suicide connector has been removed, the hot air tool is hardwired to the base unit. Way better!
The hand tool has a insulating silicone grip piece, comfortable and my fingers dont get warm.

The earthing on the inside of the base unit could have been fixed to a better spot but that will do.

I had a go desoldering a few parts from a old ethernet card and im asking myself why i dit not get one of these sooner.
Could have saved me a lot of trouble in the past...

Good buy!

Those rework stations are "meh" before you get one and "wow" after you try it out. ;)

That is a good explanation of my experience so far!
But i got one complaint, the lead to the tool is too short.

Except that, im fairly happy  ;D

Unless it is a piece of junk.  Air is the one place that you can cheap out without much issue.  A cheap pair of hot tweezers and other stuff just makes you hate life.  Having to hold the right force to line up with ends so you can desolder that 0201, gets old real fast.   >:(
