Another Australian toaster reflow build
« on: May 28, 2018, 11:15:55 am »
Hi guys - instead of resurrecting the 2015 Australian toaster oven reflow thread I thought I would start a new one.

The previous thread is here: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/reviews/australian-toaster-reflow-oven/

I have found it hard to locate a small, 9 litre, toaster oven with quartz elements here in Australia. The only ones I can find here is a Russell Hobbs with two quartz elements, one top and one bottom and a larger 19 litre Russell Hobbs with four quartz elements and a convection fan. The dial (which will be removed, only shows a max temp of 230° - not sure if I will be able to get it hotter with a reflow controller.

I am looking at using either the Whizoo Controleo3 (http://www.whizoo.com/controleo3) or the new Rocket Scream Tiny Reflow Controller (http://www.rocketscream.com/blog/product/tiny-reflow-controller/).

The Whizoo is a complete kit with heat tape, SSR's etc etc and looks like it has good support. I just need to find an oven here in Australia to use for the build.

I will only be doing boards that would easily fit in the smaller oven.

Photos of the ovens are attached - any advice wold be appreciated.

For a controller, check my channel. I present a controller from Andy Brown that works. Android app included.
I show my oven built too. Maybe you can take some ideas.

I have an old toaster oven that actually has a little fan in it.

DO they work well?

I thought maybe it could be improved by adding some insulator on the glass pannel.

Wondering where this finished up?

Which oven and controller did you settle on? How did it all work out?

I have received the Rocket Scream controller but haven't purchased an oven yet. I check them out every time I go to the shops !

I need to get organised !

I am just about to order the Rocket Stream controller was actually communicating with the guy in Malaysia last night. The only distraction at this stage is I have discovered the T962/A reflow unit and wading through all the intel on those as to if that might make more sense.

Seems like a number of Chinese designed and manufactured products there are some issues however the weigh up is there is some engineering involved with the toaster oven as well SSR etc but there needs so engineering as well if I went the T962/a route.

If you ever get yourself organised would be great to hear how you got on? Did you order his K Thermocouple too?

My problem is not so much getting organised but making a decision!  |O  :)

Goodluck with your journey...

Just bought the two element Russell Hobbs model from Big W (its the model you pictured) they have them on special ATM for $47. They also have the 4 element version on special for $87. Sorry not sure how much longer the special goes for.

Was tempted to go the 4 burner but I reckon the 2 burner will do the size boards I am likely to design. I might use it 3 or 4 times a year.

I wouldn’t worry about the fact as standard the oven thermostat only goes to 230C, you will be bypassing the thermostat anyway if the controller needs to push past 230C. If it does it won’t need to go there to long so I no safety concernsd.

I probably won’t get to put this altogether before I go away. I finished up not ordering the Rocket Scream controller so I will have a look at what else is around before I do.

I just picked up a sunbeam bt2600. It is 9L and what looks to be 4 quartz elements - the newer models have different looking elements than the older one, with metal shielding around each, which I read somewhere is an indication that they are quartz (on the big bt2600 build thread here I think?). Is there an obvious way to tell?

Have a controleo3 on the way, looking forward to the build :)
