I have drawers of well sorted parts and connectors (take connector as an one example).  The parts are in individual bag, and they are stacked on top of each other to save space.  When there is a need to search for a particular connector, I shall have to go through the stack and check if it is in my stock, and act from there.  I think this process can be improved, and resealing all the bags and putting them back is always a dragging task.

I am thinking to take pictures of all the connectors, connector pin, etc and put in a tablet.  And the tablet picture library shall be first search before the manual searching of the drawers for the part.  It is also a productive reuse of my 11" galaxy tablet.

Maybe there is some app or some idea better than the picture viewers to show and allow easy search of a part out of the stock of connectors and parts?

In my basement, I have 7 racks of old stuff we saved, baby stuff, old books, old CD's, etc.

I have a folder "Saved stuff" with 7 subfolders, each rack's folder has subfolders one for each box...

Not as elegant as an "app", but certainly more portable.

There are plenty of inventory management apps available. You could even manage items with qr codes and or nfc tags etc.

Bitten before, I can see the wisdom.  I shall have to stick faithfully to the folder organisation as a base and letting the "app" to work on top of the folders and sub-folders.   Was hoping someone shoutout a defacto standard (like "quickbook" to SME accounting) for the part-searching and viewing requirement.  So far photo-management app seems to what is available.  Shall be trying a few popular one for next few weeks,  and shall report if they are make significant differences vs  nothing using them.

@eugeneine, do you link the pictures to your spreadsheet?  My knoweldge of spreadsheet is limited, I am thinking it is not easy  and searching through them is not easy.  For connector, normally I can't remember or don't have the name or description, I  just need to dig up from my stock to mate a certain connector or connector pin for testing and measurement.

@vector31337,  so far my inventory system is when stock runs low then queue it in the "to order" list.  Still cannot justify (or too lazy) an inventory management system.

Yes, just dump the pics in a folder, or datasheets and insert hyperlinks into them.  You can search for a simple formula on the openoffice forum tat will return the current directory your file is in then if you put your pictures/datasheet directories under it and append to the current directory formula the whole thing can be moved around if needed.

If you prefer the file folder method you can use an app to browse and load media or images on a Windows or Mac file share and access it over your wireless home network.

That way no matter what device you are on you can get to the PDF/Photo/Video you need. Plus it's a lot easier to sort and backup crap on a desktop computer.

One other thing I will mention when you lose a "single file" type repository to corruption or a software bug without a regular backup you will wish you never chose that system in the first place.

No need to waste $ on Win/Mac when a $35 Raspberry Pi will suffice.
