the power board went open circuit after only a short period of time of a less then 600w load.
cycling of the on board switch with some plug packs & a computer.
the failure was in the rocker switch.
dust particles can get down between the plastic switch case and the plastic switch rocker. sitting on the electrodes at the bottom.
the fix was to bypass the switch by some resoldering. as the reassembling the cheap plastic rocker switch was unsuccessful.
Australian branded Jackson power board is considered reliable with better quality more robust plastic housing then cheap no-name boards.
with its own 10amp circuit breaker.

They're all built a cheaply as possible and the best you can hope for is to buy it from a bigger retailer like Woolworths and hope they at least checked them over for safety and to preserve their own reputation. At least you can easily then get a refund/replacement.
If it was only a short time and before you dismantled it I would have taken it back you probably would have readily got your money back. These big retailers have no trouble pushing returns back on the supplier. What they can't afford is wasting staff time on refunds.
This would be the one place where those triangular tamper-resistant screws would be a good thing. Keeping the return option open before it's too late.

Frankly that's pretty standard for supermarket / DIY store stock. You were unlucky - the normal failure mode for those switches is the contacts welding closed on high inrush loads.
The soldering is pretty crap, but effective. The cable strain relief is suspect (you want one with visible screw clamps). The VDR does have a thermal fuse heatshrinked in close contact but soldering the PCB to potentially flexing contact strips is not great.
I think you'll struggle to find better without close examination, or buying a more 'pro grade'. Check ebay for used server rack power distribution strips.

Well, hopefully by the time you've found them you have time to think on it, and you decide to return it instead of opening it up.
